Hey guys

I have been looking at boats and I am trying to figure out seating...I have always owned a boat with jump seats by the motor box, but I am opening up my mind to a rear bench with a sunpad.

What do you have?

Does the bench seat make the cockpit feel cramped?

Looking at 20 footers, and this will be my first open bow.

It depends on how high your motor enclosure is. In a lot of cases a bench is not an option because the enclosure is too high, therefore jumpseats on either side are the only thing you can do.

I have a bench seat on my current Wellcraft and I like it because it gives a lot of seating without breaking up into individual single seats. Ideally, I'd like even more seating, but that's the best I can do with the way this boat is laid out.

All of the boats I am looking at are late 90's in both configurations.

Most of the boats I looked at had two jump seats flanking the engine enclosure. I think I saw only one that had a full bench running across aft with a larger sunpad. IMHO I wanted the jump seats instead of a large sunpad. The way mine is setup is really cool, the two jump seats can be elevated to the same height as the engine enclosure, which is also padded. This makes a very large sun pad accross the stern. Depending on what I do I can either have a large sunpad or two jump seats. My boat is a 19ft Cuddy from 2000.

The actual amount of available places to park rear ends is basically the same in either configuration. The differences are the direction those rear ends are facing, and the amount of actual real estate in the boat. The bench seat with two captains seats will take up a little more floor space, but allow for a slightly larger sunpad and allow for all persons riding to get all cozied up next to each other while riding...whereas the typical two back-to-back loungers and two jumpseats by the engine will allow more useable open floor space (making the boat feel bigger IMO), but will force all riders to spread out a bit more. This works well, because you can lay the loungers flat, and this will actually create seating for two more rear ends, and when you put the rear-most jump seats in the sunpad position, the sunpad is almost the same size as the bench seating option's sunpad. This lounger and jumpseat style seems to be the more versatile arrangement, and the most popular, as it is typically the "standard" arrangement, with the bench (sometimes called 'brougham') seating being an additional expense option on new boats. The ideal seating arrangement...the one my next boat will have...is the wraparound (sometimes called 'sunsport') seating like that found in most wakeboard boats, where you have a captains seat at the helm, and the rest of the seating is one continuous wraparound bench that covers the rear and side of the interior.

Unless your from Saudi Arabia and have 20 wives, I see no reason for such a huge sun pad. My folks have the arena seating in their new boat (23ft Regal), but I don't care so much for the two large sun pads they have in the back. Just seems like a waste of usable space. It feels like with a 23ft boat they only have a little more room than my 19ft, though it might be from the wider beam of the boat and not the overall length.

True...and when it come time to fix / replace that upholstery, those big sunpads are NOT cheap!

Thanks you guys have nailed my two thoughts - places to sit and floor space. I have always had the jump seats but a boat just caught my attention with a bench.

My concerns with the bench are can u get four people on it and how crowded ll it feel with children?

Depends on how wide the bench is and how wide the people are. They look as wide as a couch, but you only really see 3 people tops sitting on a couch at the same time. You might be able to fit 4 adults on there, but they will be very cozy. Also women have wider hips than men. Children will take up less room so you can fit more of them on the bench, though children can vary a lot as well. If your talking about the next generation of "bigger" American children, then you won't be able to fit that many on there. :p

People will subconsciously shy away from places that are too crowded.
