Belt noise?

Hi all,

I am a new reader from Australia, great forum. Thought I would post a question about a boat I just bought. It has a salt water cooled 454 with a velvet drive and TR/TRS outdrive. It was built in Australia in 1981, but I do not know how that relates to model age in the US.

When I first start it, it squeals like the belts are slipping. I tightened them up but it still does it. The noise evenually goes away, but just when it has, if I move the trim up and down, the same noise reappears.

Also, one time when we were just leaving the dock, I opened up the throttle quickly and as the boat was about to get up on the plane, drive was lost and the engine revs raced. I slowed down and the drive returned. The oil level is correct, but I haven't been game to open it up quickly again. If I open it up slowly, it reaches WOT (4500rpm) without any sign of slipping.

I was woundering if there is possibly one common area I should be concentrating on, or do I have a multitude of faults with my boat?

Cheers,
Paul

Re: Belt noise?

You need a wider belt or new belt on the altenator, even when tight a V belt will slip under load if is sides or worn--Bob

Where does the sound come from? The fact that when you change the trim the sound comes back says gimbal bearing. The other problem sounds like a spun hub on the prop.

Re: Belt noise?

It has been too difficult to pin point the location of the noise. The boat is a 26 foot flybridge cruiser, with most of the motor well below the deck. I have removed all inspection covers but still the noise seems to come from everywhere.

Thanks for your responses laddies and novicetech

I don't know for sure but isn't a Velvet Drive a cone clutch? If the cone is worn that may be a cause of the slipping under power.
