bees kill big dog In oklahoma

hello everyone, I just found out that a dog was killed by some bees this week. It was a greatdane big dog. I have never heard of this happining with honey bees??? the news said it was only honey the newspaper said it was killer bees. what do you all think? <br />Thanks <br />serenity

We have had the" killer" or africanized bees here for several years. they arent as big a threat as the movie made it out to be. But they are agressive. Wife works in ER in local hospital, and we have 2 to 3 people a year stung many times, noone has died yet but its a matter of time, I would say they are a bigger threat than our rattlesnakes.

I think Oklahoma is a little far north for Aficanized Honey Bees. The climate here is by far more mild than most any part of OK and we have had no sightings in the San Joaquin Valley.

It was not killer bees, just plain old honey bees, test will be done by another lab as well. But they are close to here for sure.

they will acclimate,just like fire ants.<br /> with no real predators they will advance.<br /> we have fire ants here in Dare county now and it gets very cold. they just learned to burrow deeper.<br /> the aficanized bee's will adapt. its what they are good at.

As rodbolt said there very good at adapting,and the same with fireants,but any bee colony gets very testy the hotter the weather and will attack when they feel threatened.

Yeah we have fire ants in our pasture They are everywhere and they dig into our gravel. it was fun last year when we put fire into their nests. but they just moved on and made more nests . I don't think well ever have snow like we used to .This winter only 1 week of weather under 30 the rest of the winter was fine with a pair of jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt. no coat really needed i just wore my hoodie everwhere I went . we are now breaking heat temps this week above 90 all week today 93.<br />It's getting hot and i'm afraid going into the drought again :0( <br />serenity

thecho<br /> we did not have fire ants here until about 6 years ago. they came in on a load of sod that was used to build a golf course. seems they used a uhaul instead of an approved company and bypassed the states agriculture inspections.<br />now we have them and there is no good way to eradicate them.<br />about the best I have used yet is to soak the mound with several gallons of chlorox and a bug sprayer. some of the mounds go 4+ feet below ground. our frost line here is like 4 inches.<br /> so make sure your states ag dept is kept informed.<br /> I think they traced the fire ants to the port of Mobile AL in the 1800's.
