Beach Rash

Previous owner beached boat. I have made several attempts to repair with Marine Tex, however it just peels off. I am not overly concerned with cosmetics. Looking for suggestions for the easiest sound repair.

And I'd look into a keel guard after that. They run about $150, but you can beach your boat and it takes the brunt of the punishment. It's a nice thick piece of colored plastic that is glue to the hull. My personal choice is the one that uses 3M adhesives.

I agree with TD.
I've a couple keels that needed this treatment ,although not nearly as bad as yours. I admit, I just smeared the resin in and let nature do the rest as it was not visible in the water.

Thanks guys, I resined it all up. It seamed to encase everything, and will hopefully hold up better then the Marine Tex.

Well the resin is coming off. Should I add a layer of cloth?
I guess just the friction of the water takes it off.
I don't beach the boat at all.

Are the fibers exposed? Are the fibers water soaked? It needs to be absolutely dry. I would use marine tex again or a marine epoxy.

When I do a repair like that I use 2" wide plastic packing tape ofer the repair. This gives you the option of forcing the repair material into the damage and then smooth it out. After it is completely dry remove the tape and you will hale a glass smooth surface.

The fibers are exposed. It was dry each time I applied anything. I tried Marine Tex and resin both several times but it just peels off.
Don't know where to go from here

Looks like your just going to have to bite the bullet and grind down with some 36 grit or something real aggresive and lay it up with some heavy roving, I know it's tough working upsidown, a garbage bag with eyes cut out, old stocking hat and rubber gloves. And as someone mentioned wide masking tape applied righr over your glass and resin will help hold it till it kicks and make a decent surface to work with too.

While there are many things resin won't stick too the only thing that comes to mind in this case would be either silicone or some sort of wax... did you or anyone else ever try to "caulk" this?

In any event you will have to do some sanding or very delicate grinding to get a good surface for adhesion.

Absolutely use the clear packing tape (NOT masking tape) to hold it up there until it cures.

Personally, I'd use some expoxy with filler mixed in to fill any voids and then a piece of glass cloth with a 3-4" overlap. Afer it cures for a few days you can feather it out and either spray some gel coat on it or paint it.

But there's absolutely something in this "wound" that's preventing adhesion. I'd bet it's silicone of some sort.
