Still digging into final path.

Primary path - Gen VI motor (all forged internals) from salvage yard (been calling for days)
Engine kit $600 or Stoked rotating kit $1800
Marine Cam kit $900
Heads will get mild porting, valve job, etc.
Estimated $1800-3300 and between 450hp - 470hp

Secondary path Gen IV motor with 4" stroke
pick a block from a few of the piles of parts I looked at
new motor kit $500
Marine cam kit $500
buy used heads and have checked.
Estimated $1500 and between 420 and 450hp...............................add a little stroke and well just a opinion....:cool:

Third path Gen IV motor with 4.25" stroke
pick a block from a few of the piles of parts I looked at
new rotating kit $1800
Marine cam kit $500
buy used heads and have checked.
Estimated between $ 2500 and 3000


99th path - Gen VII motor, new cam, Dart intake, minor head work.
Depnding on source of 8.1, estimated between $1500 and $3k and 480hp

on top of the above, need the following:
EMI manifolds
Custom switchable exhaust plumbing to fit the existing volvo plumbing, etc.
new alternator or rebuild my existing
New starter for BBC


Does a roller cam have any big advantages @ 5500 rpm....aka roll it or stroke it???

I havent found much need for a roller cam so far. The 1-piece rear seal and improved oiling keeps bringing me back to a Gen VI motor (1996-2000 L29)

I just missed out on a $200 L29 (Gen VI) block at a local salvage yard.

I did find this build sheet for a Gen IV stock stroke. at .060 over, its now a 468 Based on the specs, its either aftermarket heads or reworked 045 or 049 heads with larger valves.

(the marine manifold is an Air-Gap clone with bronze water passage inserts (Buddy Barr))

460hp @5300 RPM, 515 lb-ft at 4200 RPM

basically its my secondary path (which is also the least expensive)

BLOCK:
  • 2 Bolt Main .060 over block, two piece rear seal, drivers side dipstick
  • Square and parallel decked
  • Align honed main bearing bore
  • Cylinders honed on computer controlled machine to within .0002
  • straightness and roundness
  • Cylinders are sonic tested for thickness

ROTATING ASSEMBLY:
  • New cast steel crankshaft internally balanced. Link to Flywheel
  • New 4340 forged connecting rods
  • 150,000 psi rod bolts
  • Forged flat top Pistons
  • Hastings moly rings
  • Rotating assembly balanced to within 2 grams
  • Melling high volume oil pump
  • Flat tappet hydraulic lifter .544 intake lift, .547 exhaust lift
  • 226 intake, 236 exhaust duration @ .050, 112 degrees lobe separation
  • Heavy duty double roller (high performance) timing set

CYLINDER HEADS:
  • GM cast iron oval port cylinder heads with screw-in studs and guide plates
  • 1.509 dia. Valve springs w/ damper. Hardened retainers & keepers. 2.25 swirl
  • polished intake valves, 1.88 swirl polished exhaust valves
  • Elgin hardened push rods
  • Long slot rockers with postitive lock adjusting nuts

A TON OF EXTRAS:
  • Marine intake manifold
  • 9.0 to 1 compression
  • Chrome valve covers
  • Cad plated marine oil pan
  • Brass freeze plugs
  • All engines are dyno tested on state-of-the-art DTS dyno and come with
  • a complete dyno sheet
  • Marine 800 CFM carburetor
  • Marine mechanical fuel pump
  • Ignition system w/ plug wires and coil

CRITICAL SPECS:
CAM:.544 Int / .547 Exh & 226 Int / 236 Exh duration @.050 - 112 degree lobe seperation
HORSEPOWER:460 @ 5300 RPM
TORQUE:515 @ 4300 RPM
COMP. RATIO:9.0 to 1
IGNITION TIMING:34 Degree Total

Thats 7 degrees at 50 about the same as the 270 in the 350.
That would be a nice even tempered high tourqe engine.....and put a little kick in that boat...you and your buddies would be all smiles irregaurdless of load..

Scott, I haven't visited this thread in a while and have to ask, how did this go from a mere small block Chevy V-8 rebuild to a monstrous Big Block Chevy with every add on imaginable? :noidea:

currently bidding on a set of 4-bolt main caps on fleabay for the Mark IV block to go with the basket case motor. also chasing down which may be a complete 1987 ambulance 454 with 4-bolt mains.

This is what was on the crate when I picked it up.
It had a 14015445 block, 3967416 crank, 3999295 pistons, 14096188 heads, 6269318 intake (like a #163 with brass water channels)

have a line on a 15015445 block in a 454 that came out of a 1987 Ambulance. hoping its a 4-bolt.

that works. will get the guys to machine up a delrin handle that threads onto the end of the dipstick tube for sealing as well.

deciphering the cam specs from the posting above, it matches the Comp Cams XM270. which is a little more aggressive than the XM262 which is the biggest that Comp lists for wet exhaust for the BBC's. the SBC's have the 268 duration as the limit.

well, didnt hear back from the one guy with the pile of parts until today, that pile is gone. @#$%#$%&^#$%

working on the ambulance motor now, which may be a 4-bolt. if so, then I am golden.

I struggle with building a 468 or jumping into the 496. I keep going back and looking at this rotating assembly http://www.buydart.com/142360bi-p-8164.html and http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sca-1-42360bi the $300 cost savings on line means that I can also hit my local machine shop up to attempt to match. However the stock stoked 468 will be about $900 less expensive. Decisions....Decisions....

local builder uses Ferrea valves. He is guaranteeing his work, so looking there.
