2 things, 1st, it would help if you posted a link to the boat you're talking about so everyone could see it, without having to do a google search.

2nd, if this boat has the wide nearly flat bottom a lot of "bay boats" have, they plane VERY easily and would likely be fine pulling a tube with a 90. Noteworthy perhaps, the 90hp Honda on our 24' pontoon boat pulls smaller tubers pretty easily. Easily as heavy, but nowhere near as efficient when it comes to planing out.....

Nothing kills the value and performance of a boat like being under powered.

The 90 Hp is 20% under the recommend minimum power and 40% under recommend maximum horsepower.

Run.... don't walk.

i will use it just for fishing and very seldom pull a tube......and possibly even upgrade to a bigger motor later on.....i would keep an eye out for a decent priced motor all the time

I had a 90 on my 17' and felt like it was a little underpowered. The Baystealth is an even bigger frame to push around.
As for the "he only wants 7k.." part, not sure what you're even talking about because you've not told us what motor is has, outside of being a 90hp and what type hours the boat has, condition etc. etc. End of the day, take someone that knows boats or pay a marine mechanic and go check it out. If that person says "it's a good buy" then do a sea trial and see what you think.

You see it time and time again when someone doesn't spend the time and effort to find the best value for their money. Instead, they find something "good enough" in their price range and go for it without considering the long term cost of ownership.

With a new outboard running upwards of $20K, "decent" (used) outboards are priced accordingly.

ummmm thats why i posted here...doing my research ...trust me it takes me months to buy a car......i can only imagine how long it will take me to pull the trigger on getting a boat........have another baystealth but its a 01 with 115hp motor and he wants 12k.....so thats 5k difference and older boat....but i will admit the 01 looks like it was better taken care of...both r nice looking boats though......i will get the link and let u guys see! thanks

You don’t need much power for pulling a tube. 90hp on that boat would be fine to pull people on tubes. Different boat but i had a 19’ Alumaweld with a 90hp merc. It would do 42 mph with me and a passenger. It was my fishing boat but I pulled adult tubers no problem and I personally skied behind it on a single/slalom ski. (I’m 220lbs)
It really depends on how heavy the boat is and how much weight you put in it passengers and equipment as far as how well the 90hp will push the boat. You need to test drive it and you’ll then know what it will do.

Dude, I don’t see anyone bashing you. I only see folks trying to help you avoid a costly but common error of buying a boat that turns out to be underpowered. We see all sorts of new members who come here with varying levels of experience with buying and using boats. We have no idea what you or don’t know, so people offer the most basic advice for starters. I don’t get why you seem to be taking offense.

If you can get the newer one for $7k I think it would be the better buy. The 2005 90hp will still have sale/ trade value and you have ~$5k to find a motor should you really need more than 90hp, then sell your 90hp to recover at least 1/2 of your extra investment

Whichever one you like the ride the best on. I will also add this, the 17’ boat I had was really just a 2 person boat. If you want to take more most of the time that’s something to consider.
