I'm getting ready to go check out a 1993 Bayliner Trophy boat I believe its 21.5ft long with a walk around . It has a 150 hp Merc black maxx for its power.I am looking for any advice from owners of things to look for, for that particular Model and year.
I know about checking engine compression ,check for soft spots, transom softness ect. Just wanted any advice that may pertain to that make and model. Here is a link to what the boat looks like its not the actual boat just the same model.bayliner.jpg

Thank You for any info and it is appreciated.

Looks clean but I see lots of add-on stuff in the transom. Bayliners dont usually hold the value, but you didnt suggest a price.

can you take it out and run it prior to purchasing for a few hours?
how much are they asking?
how many hours on the engine?
I still see bayliner capri's with force motors runnin out there so do your due diligence prior to purchasing.
best of luck

Looks clean. Was the bottom repainted? Is that the correct trailer for that boat? Looks like it's resting in on there kinda odd and not much bunk space to distribute weight...on the back on the transom where the left trailer bunk meats the boat it looks like there is an issue...unless it's just the pic.

Not enough information to really go with. The boat does look reasonably kept, and if it checks out might be a nice rig. What HP is that OB? What price are they asking?

Looks very similar to my 89 except mine doesn't have a cuddy. The trailer is just like mine as well, it is the original kind for the boat. I like the kicker pad on the rear, thinking about taking my swim platform and ladder off and adding one. I run a Merc. 150 OB (2001 saltwater addition) and am very pleased. IMO the fact that Bayliners turn some folks noses up is a good thing because it allows a pore man like me to get a nice boat at a reasonable price. I paid $750.00 for mine with a blown power head and it's solid as a rock. Paid a guy that has been in business for decades $1,900.00 to rebuild the power head, so for $2,650.00 I got a boat that will go all the places and do all the things to have fun as any of the higher thought of brands of equal power and size. Mine will mull around in a foot of water, I'm more comfortable with at least 1.5 ft, but I have been in as little as 8 in and pushed on threw, so it has a very shallow draft. Would have never figured a 21.5 ft. boat to do that. Anyway, Hopefully everything checks out and you have a good test run and can get a good price. Summer is almost here!!!

Looks like a good rig if it's been stored correctly: bow up and plug out so it drains. It looks like it's holding water in bow in the last picture--if that's how he kept it, I'd be worried.

My uninformed concern might be the 150 is a little light for a 21' with a cuddy due to extra weight; I have a 21' center console with a 150 that does fine. Maybe you can find specs on two 21' boats of the same hull and make, one cuddy and one CC, and see how much more the cuddy weighs--might not even be significant.

I see a lot of Bayliner trophy's out on the bay around here, as they are an inexpensive entry level boat, but couldn't guage their age or how they hold up.

That was my concern too - why I asked about the HP. I wasn't sure if it was just a 150HP.

Didn't that year bayliner come with an Escort brand trailer? Or did you have an option on the trailer you prefered?

Don't know the brand of my trailer, the PO painted over the Galv, with black rattle can paint, but it looks just like the one above, single axle and all, I've also got several pictures of other Bayliners with the same trailer. I think they used several different trailers depending on year model and options, but it seems like that particular trailer was one type they used.

My '06 EdgeWater @ 2800# dry came from the factory with a Yamaha 150 4 stroke. With 3 people, lots of gear, 90 gallon of fuel, she works great unless you are looking for more than 40 MPH.

That was my concern too - why I asked about the HP. I wasn't sure if it was just a 150HP.

My neighbor way back in '93 bought a new 24' Trophy with an I/O. He was happy with it for years. I was never on the boat as if we were fishing together we always took mine......

Re: Bayliner Trophy 1993 ???

Well just got back from looking at boat .The seller wanted $4500.00 but couldn't get the engine to start boat has been sitting 5+ years the trailer is rusted badly he welded on some pieces of metal to help beef up trailer, shortened tongue about 8 inches past the rust.(defenitley going to need a new trailer) Dropped the price down to $3500.00 we just couldn't get the engine to turn over starter just didn't want to do anything (even after jumping the solenoid)

Tank is has a 72 gallons of 5 y/o gas.

The engine was 150 HP black max that owner put on before parking it. Power tilt is stuck in up position can hear solenoid click and faint motor running but wouldnt lower with out using the bleed valve.

Floors felt solid but noticed inside of cuddy was all wet like it had water sittiing in it . Person said it happened when he was pressure washing it and didn't notice the water coming into cuddy then raised bow to drain it.Stood on floor in cuddy felt solid and by looking at other bpoats he had on property with bow up I think he was being truthful(I hope)
He got motor to start and run after I headed back home. I"m still debating on if to get it but not sure. I will be going back to the area this weekend and hopefully he will have the bugs worked out and maybe get a sea trail if it doesn't sell before then.It has some cosmetic issues that I can deal with but was just leary about motor not working. Wasn't sure if boat was worth $3500.00 with questionable motor and even more questionable trailer. Have to drive it 250 miles to get it home.

Re: Bayliner Trophy 1993 ???

I sure hope he wasn't trying to start it with the 5 year old gas. If so add a carb job to your start-up list. And at least around here, there is a long waiting list to get a boat worked on.

It's a project boat; you'll drop another grand on the start-up at least unless you do all the work yourself. And you need a new (another) trailer just to get it home--imagine how the hubs and tires are.

The 250 miles is the deal breaker to me--you've already invested 500 miles/10 hours for the first inspection, which was a failure. I wouldn't do it again. You see a list of negatives that will only grow.

Next time ()next boat) confirm that the boat is running before you go.

Agreed. Too many problems for the price, too long of a drive to inspect ...

Re: Bayliner Trophy 1993 ???

Different trailer in at least okay condition- $700.00. Questionable motor and inoperable power tilt, fuel system needs flush at very least- couple grand? Can only guess because you really don't know what all is needed, but still, somewhere around $2700.00 right off the bat. sounds like a $1500.00 boat at best, and only if you want a project boat. If you are looking for something your family or just yourself can jump right in and start enjoying this boating season, I'd keep looking. The boat looks good in the pictures, but I can tell you first hand, as I'm sure you know now, there is nothing like seeing it in person. If the hull is solid, then it can be turned back around and made back into a real nice boat if you are willing to put forth the effort. It's tough on anything to just sit in the open elements and after five years there is no telling how many hidden problems will crop up once you start powering things up and stressing the mechanics.

Yeah, defiantly going to be a project, and you might easily wind up missing out on this entire season of boating trying to fix this one.
I guess if you can get it for cheap enough and don't mind spending time and unknown amounts of cash...but the whole towing a rusty, modified old trailer all that way home sounds like a deal breaker...especially with 450lbs of old gas in the tank!

Re: Bayliner Trophy 1993 ???

thanks for everyone's input .He sold the boat to someone else , but now I feel better walking away from it with everyones comments.

I knew it would be work to get it back and going again before splash but I have a boat that will give me another year or 2 .

I know the drive was pretty far but more then half of the drive was going to a town I needed to do for other business(also if you live where I do you better plan on driving to look at anything or buy any large ticket item. We are to small of a place to buy the good stuff local.)

My next boat I'm going to go look at is a 1987 Starcraft Bluewater 210 with a 175 hp Yamaha hes asking $6900.00 for it
