**Previously posted in "Boat Topics and Questions (not engine topics)" I could not figure out how to delete it there.**

I am working on my 1985 Bayliner Capri

I have a picture of what I am talking about here: http://www.jfnewell.com/boat/transom.htm

I am trying to put a picture at the end of this message as well. (hey it worked!)

**For those who don't want to look at the picture, my question is; How much wood is in the transom of a 1985 Bayliner Capri? Is it just in the part where the motor-well is, or does it go all the way across the back?

The pictures are not exact, but just a rough idea.

Looking at the picture, drawing A, my transom has cracks and movement at the
red lines.

The previous owner tried to repair by putting a big block of wood as shown in drawing B, and by putting a think mat of fiberglass as shown on drawing C (side view)

My assumption is that there is wood inside of the transom itself, and that no matter how much the outside is beefed up, the real problem will keep on causing cracks and damage......

So, ultimatly, my question is....Is the wood in the transom (drawing d) like the yellow part, or does the wood go all the way across the back, as in the red and yellow parts?

I was looking at the Seacast product, and while it seems like no big deal to open up the transom over the yellow part, get the wood out, and pour in their product.....it does seem like a major ordeal to open up the transom over the red parts.

Re: Bayliner Transom Repair

I sort of put a Band-Aid on my transom, the wood does usually go all the way across. Mine is severely rotted on the port side, so I cut a think peice of Mahogany (got from job site) and place that in the bottom going all the way across and the lower engine bolts go through that. At the top on the inside of the splash area (not sure of proper term,..) I cut a 30x6" peice of stainless, and now the pressure from the motor is spread evenly instead of the 2 upper bolts just wanting to pop right through. See pics.. Any thoughs on this anyone??? I know it is a band-aid, but I can jump up and down on the motor so I should be all set eh?
Jim,

If your transom is flat, across the back, there probably is wood all the way across. If not flat, it is probably only in the engine well.

It's easy to find out, drill some small test holes on the inside.

Replacing transoms on f'glass boats is much more difficult that aliminum ones. In your case, at a minimum, you are going to have to remove the motorwell or lift the entire deck assembly.

Your assumptions are correct though, placing support on the outside will NOT work.

Re: Bayliner Transom Repair

I know this is an old thread, but I have the exact same question. My 85 Bayiner is completly rotted in the middle yellow section. I'm not sure how far it goes. Tomorrow I'm going to go at it with a pry bar, but I'd like to know how far the wood goes so I know how much of a project this is going to be, since I'm also replacing the rotted floor.

Re: Bayliner Transom Repair

I decided to find out for myself today. There is in fact wood going all the way across the transom. But they are 2 separate pieces of wood, and luckily for me, the outter pieces were not rotted, so I'm leaving them and replacing the middle part. I'm going to reinforce it with a sheet of aluminum or steel.

Re: Bayliner Transom Repair

i also have a 1985 bayliner cuddy that i just redid the transom on ,only the middle of mine was rotted so i replaced the wood in the middle ,i actually put 2 peices in the middle,i used all epoxy resin and 24oz fiberglass and 1.5oz mat. i also glassed the splash well to the the transom all the way around ,that strengened it up quite a bit, if you have any questions feel free to ask
