Bayliner not running

I have an '89 Bayliner with Ford 5.8. Was running great on the ocean when motor quit. Turns over and fires as if starting but will not run. After being towed in and trailered home, it started and ran fine. I checked and replaced the alternator thinking this was the problem. Once I put it together, the problem is back. It turns over, fires right up and promptly quits. One friend thinks it is the starter (bendix gear kicking out) but this would not address why it quit in the first place. Another theory is that it may be the switch. I am in the process of checking the switch, but if that is not it, I am completely lost. Any ideas?

First of all. the starter will not cause it to stall. I dont care what the starter is doing. what kind of ignition does it have. wene it stalled was the motor normally operating temp. or was it over heated. does it start fine wene it is cold?

I figured the same about the starter. It was not overheated. Other than when I returned from having been towed that first day, I cannot get it to start. I had a portable jumper that first time which led me to originally target the alternator; it tested ban when running. since that time, I have not been able to start it. I really do not know about the ignition; it is stock as far as I can tell.

check to see if wene the key is in the run position. If the coil is getting power. because you stated that it stars but stals. the key has two power points in it one for staring and one for normal running.

Do I check this at the switch or the coil? I was kinda thinking maybe the switch. That seems easy. I'm not too sure how to check the coil.

I would check at both locations. The coil is real easy if the motor has points. the coil will have proably 3 wires check to see if one of them has power wene the fey is on. If it has efi ignition the coil will proably have 4 wire going to it. check to see if it has power to one or two of them.

Thank you so much for your help. I do not have power at the coil nor at the switch with the switch turned on. Is this a problem with the switch? Also, if it is the switch, I just checked on West Marine site for replacement switches. There is a huge price difference between some of them (about double). Is there something special I should look for when replacing the switch? Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your help. I do not have power at the coil nor at the switch with the switch turned on. Is this a problem with the switch? Also, if it is the switch, I just checked on West Marine site for replacement switches. There is a huge price difference between some of them (about double). What i would is take your old switch off check to see if it has a part number on it. If it does go to ebay and see if you can get one used. and make sure the new swicth has the same number of connectors on it. you said you do not have power at the swicth. try checking to see if there is a problem between the battery and the swicth. Because the swicth should have power all the time even wene it is off. the swicth is what sends that power to the coil. but the swicth should have power at all times. check your fuse box to make sure all your fuses are good. Robert: Thanks for your help on the phone. I think I am still lost. My switch has three posts. I have power to two of the posts when the switch is on. The third does not have power. Should all three wires be hot when the switch is on? If so, it would seem to be a simple solution to replace the switch. I do have power coming out of the fuse box. I was prepared to replace the fuse box due to the age, but this would appear to not be necessary.

What i would is take your old switch off check to see if it has a part number on it. I Re-checked the coil and the switch with a new light tester. ( I had doubts about the other one). I definitely do not have power to the coil. I have power to two of the three posts on the switch when in the run position. Where do I go from here?
