hi folks,

i just purchased a bayliner 1989 6m cuddy,
after the check up, the mechanician told me that the fuel tank is in state of corosion, knowing that it is a stainless steel tank and built in ...
the worker also told me that if i want to replace it i'll have to cut the deck, because this boat doesn't have any feature or hatch in order to open the deck to make it threw to the fuel tank .

so my questions to you are:
1- is that propable that a stainless tank be corosed ?!!! or the problem of the heavy fuel leaking is something else?
2- if so, is it true that it is necessary to cut off the deck ?!!!! or there is another methode to replace the tank .

best wishes

Re: bayliner fuel tank replacement

a few yrs ago i had a reinell 26' or 8meter sun-cruiser with a pinhole in bottom of fuel tank which i cut out floor above and removed thru cabin and out the door and after tank inspection one lousy pinhole in bottom that sits in bilge. at the time money was tight and replacement was $$$, so i opted to repair by using jb weld epoxy from just about any auto store. i lightly sanded outside and inside a little spot and applied this repair. i felt confident it was going to hold. i buttoned everything back up and used this rig for about a year and half then was forced to sell it due to hard times. i think to this day whoever has it can rest assure it is a good repair. if the tank had multiple corrosion spots i would have found a way for new tank. i also did same with a 1989 gmc full size blazer diesel fuel tank it developed a pinhole leak under the fuel pickup tube, jb weld to the rescue! well just saying here its something ive done and works. good luck!

You sure its SS? Bayliner is not known for spending any extra money on anything during those years. I would guess it is AL. And, I would also guess you have to cut the deck to remove it. I would not repair a gas tank in a boat reguardless of the good luck the other poster had. Gas is just to dangerous in a boat.

Yep, opening the deck is the only way to access & replace/repair your tank. If repaired, it needs to withstand the 24hr pressure test @3-5psi & held for 24hrs w/ no leak down in pressure.

Depending on the extent of the leak & what allowed water to come into contact w/ the tank (probably aluminum, as George suggests), I would be surprised if you find it nearly as straight forward as: open the deck, remove tank, repair/replace tank, reinstall & redo the deck. It's extremely likely that there will be more structure & materials below deck that will likely require attention, once you open the deck. For the reason's George mentioned about Bayliner's attention to detail (lack of) and low cost construction during the 80's.

Scan thru some iboats mid-late 80's resto threads. There are quite a few, some 90's too. In fact there are 5 Bayliner threads right here at the bottom of your thread:
