Hello everyone. I will be starting up a restoration project for a Bayliner that I recently purchased from someone who didn't take care of it very well. I have done a lot of reading the past few days/weeks and it looks like with a little help here I can do this project without having to take it into a shop.

What I have is
1996 Bayliner Capri 1950 I/O

From the pictures shown. There is a soft spot in the front of the boat that I need to replace the plywood. I plan on tearing up the carpet soon but before doing so I want to know how to get the new wood back in place. How do I lift up the sides, driver and passenger(lines in green) to put the plywood back down for starters?

Re: Bayliner Capri Floor repair help

Bayliners are notorious for rotted floors and below. The area you want to try to remove is spanning the two stringers. You can go ahead and cut this section out but I don't think you are going to like what you see underneath. On the outside chance you will be able to just replace that section, you'll have to create some support for the replacement ply and then glass it over.
What you are proposing to do is not that difficult. Where I think this is heading though is going to be a commitment.

Until you pull the carpet you/we don't know what you've got to fix. May not have to go beyond the stringers

Re: Bayliner Capri Floor repair help

well TIMC welcome to iboats!
First let me say congratulations on you bayliner.... Contrary to what others say they are not bad boats... They were built bad there is a difference!!! the boat itself is a nice boat but the workmanship left LOTs to be desired!!!!
after you rip out your floor you not going to like what is left underneath... i have a capri 1600 o/b and i am doing a total resto on it as we speak....(the wife) thought we could just fix a few rotted places and be good to go.. I knew better but she is always right hehe NOT. anyway i ripped the carpet up and the floor was in semi decent shape but the transom was history. I also found where someone just laid a piece of wood over a rotted part in the bow area and the stuff underneath was gone! so guess what out everything came...
after cutting out the floors your left with the stringers. 2 pieces of wood running th long axis of the hull. they didnt look that bad to me at first but then is did the core sample idea talk about on here and found the FIR wiood that was used wasnt there anymore ... It had rotted completely away too nothing....
ok so now after new stringers, new floors, new transom, new knees...im almost done with the hard stuff.....
but it has been a great experience. ive learned alot doing this and it wans that hard. this site will teach you everything you need to know and will answer any question no matter how stupid it may sound. the GOTO Guys are lowkee (hes redoing a bayliner now) and OOPS he is the fiberglass man... there are guys here that are i/o freaks that know then inside and out and love trying to figure out you issues...
All in all take you time and it will be a new boat better than new and all yours for cheap and will last for years to come.

Thanks for all the good information from everyone. I'll begin tearing up the carpet in the next week or so. I'll continue to post pictures to keep everyone updated. Maybe this thread will help someone else in the future. I just hope I'm not over my head on this.

Re: Bayliner Capri Floor repair help

Hi - I have the same problem, more or less, with my 2000 Maxum. Seems the previous owner didn't take care of it very well. There are a couple of soft spots in the floor, but I only know one way to fix things. Tell you what. Let's start this project more or less together. I probably won't be able to finish my project till the spring, it being so cold here in the winter, but I'd be happy to provide moral support and exchange notes! For me, the first thing I will have to do is take out the seats and remove the carpet. We'll both see where we are at after that!

I am doing a similar project on your boat's little brother:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2652614#post2652614

I wanted to replace some floor in the same area, but I realized that the only way was to replace the whole floor. The problem is that there is no way to cut out just a small section because there is nothing to mount the replacement wood to (at least not without putting some sort of support under it, which would interfere with the ski locker.
