Batwing Exhaust Manifold Replacement

Well, I am dealing with a cracked block from the boat I just bought, and it has the batwing exhaust manifolds. It is a 1997 4.3L Mercruiser. I am converting an automobile motor into a marine, and while I am at it, I am planning on switching out the batwing manifolds for the new models. Can anyone help me with what part numbers I need to make this work, and not have to modify anything else? Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much. I knew there were issues regarding the angle on the risers or something like that, and I wanted to be sure I got the right pieces.

I bought the same manifolds from FredWarner...

He's a very good guy and took the time to answer ALOT of my questions...
Manifolds are great so far!

Re: Batwing Exhaust Manifold Replacement

I'm glad someone has experience with him (and positive at that). I am dealing with what I am assuming (I know the cliche) is a cracked block. I just don't want to run the risk of another water infiltration, and from everything I have read, the conversion kit is the way to go. I am taking the replacement block to the machine shop tomorrow to get dipped, magnafluxed, honed, new bearings installed, and brass plugs installed. I am also getting the replacement heads dipped and magnafluxed while I am there. I plan on starting a thread showing my auto to marine conversion once I get the block back.

Will this conversion set work? The PNs you gave would cost around $1200, and I'm at about $820 after shipping with this one. All parts are Sierra, and USA made, so I am hoping it will work.

The part numbers you have (from me originally) are for a dry-joint set up. If you are going to change away from the batwings (good choice by the way), then why not go the whole way and go to dry-joint.... Those fred-wobbly things are still the old ('wet-joint') system...

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between the wet and dry joint? By the way, that question opened up a ton of jokes I know.

Please do start the thread on the conversion, curious minds want to know!

Have you done a cost analysis on this entire project from start to finish to see how much if anything you're really saving vs just buying a brand new crate motor?

Crate motors don't come with exhaust manifolds...

Seadawg... I will start a new thread on the differences... Give me a bit of time.. I'm a bit busy at the moment, so much going on..

Re: Batwing Exhaust Manifold Replacement

I didn't do a cost analysis, but I know I am going to be coming in at about $1000 without the new manifolds. I have a slight advantage, as my grandfather owned a body and mechanic shop which I worked in from ages 12 to 22, and got the tools from it when he passed, and my best friend of 26 years is a R&D engineer and engine builder for Cummins. My main cost was the machine work, and the mandatory (in my opinion) replacement parts. I am guessing if you don't have any mechanical experience, don't try this, or it would be cheaper with the crate swap.
