Re: Battery Wiring Confusion

You can right click on the image and pick save image as and it will down load.

Oops, maybe not. I did that and got an image the same size as it shows in your post and when I tried to zoom it, it blurred out and was unreadable. I went back and right clicked and picked Open Link in New Tab (or New Window, depending on your browser), the right clicked on that and picked Save Image As and got a good sized pic I could read. Your mileage may vary.

For wire color codes used in many boats and outboard engines see

Classic Whaler: Boston Whaler: Reference: Wire Color Code

The information provided applies to most brands of boat; manufacturer specific information is given for particular brands of outboard engines.

The American Boat and Yacht Council seems to be authoritative on wire color. See a portion of their standard at

https://law.resource.org/pub/us/cfr/ibr/001/abyc.E-09.1990.pdf

Note that the above document is dated 1990 and refers to use of YELLOW as a primary power distribution for DC negative. (See page 33). That contradicts the earlier assertion that this standard was implemented in 2007.

Re: Battery Wiring Confusion

So just a quick update. I got the boat running initially by jumping the alternator. Now it starts every time by key. i was able to lower the drive by wire. The button still does not allow me to go down. So im fairly sure its somewhere in the connection or wiring. Shouldn't be hard to fix ill just clean the connections. And test the wires. And now that i have it running i noticed two of the gauges are not working. The volt gauge and rpm gauge. Once again im fairly positive this will require some connection cleaning as-well. But all in all the boat is running very good. The idle sounds just right. The gears engage. For a boat that sat in storage for 7 years its amazing how well its running. Feels like its just off the dealership lot.

Hi jhebert, thanks for finding the ABYC standards.

To help clear up some of the confusion of what I meant by saying the main change was done in I believe 2007.

Though there has been an option of colors to use for ground cables over the years, most but not all of the boat manufactures seemed to choose black over yellow for many years. I can vaguely recall seeing just couple of boats using yellow as a ground cable throughout the years but mostly it was black that was used on basic recreational type boats that I was use to seeing.

When I went to a boat manufacturing plant in 2005 or 6 (been awhile now) I recall them mentioning that they plan on going to yellow soon and I believe the idea was to try and make yellow a new industry standard to start using vs using the black. Most likely this idea was set forth by ABYC due to the dangers of mixing up colors mentioned by UncleWillie.

In 07, The new boats our dealer sold started coming with yellow.

I did not notice where it mentions yellow is the primary color but it does mention Black, or Yellow used for DC negative conductors leaving an option to use either color.

Page 34 was interesting to read for the bilge blowers though. The note mentions if yellow is used for DC negative, the blower must use brown with a yellow stripe.

My apologies for any confusion I may have caused above.
