Hey folks im a little confused as to which wires go where on my battery. My father removed my battery but cant remember which wires went where on the battery, specifically a yellow one. Iv attached a picture of all 4 wires. Im sure the red ones go to the positive terminal and the black one goes to the negative. The yellow one is the one im not sure about. The boats a 2004 bayliner 175 with a 3.0 alpha one gen 2 photo 1.jpgphoto 2.jpgphoto 3.jpg

Re: Battery Wiring Confusion

In your picture #1 is the yellow wire under a bolt? Is the bolt part of the motor mounting system? At first glance it would appear to be a ground. I would invest more time to be sure where it goes to.

Yes it goes to a bolt on the back of the motor. Sorry about the rotation of the photos. Along with that yellow wire there a black wire attached to the same bolt which leads me to believe its a ground.

Ayuh,.... That's a logical deduction,.... Must be a replacement somebody put on there, 'n they didn't have any black wire,...

It may have come from the factory that way: Yellow can also be used as negative per ABYC standards.

Re: Battery Wiring Confusion

im pretty sure its a ground as well. when i attach it to a negative terminal my accessories work. when i attach it to my positive terminal they dont. But for some reason my trim wont go down. It just makes a click every time i try to lower it. But if i try to raise it it creates the proper sound. Perhaps this belongs in a new forum/thread now.

Is there some kind of peg like outboard engines have to keep the drive up? because i dont see one, but even if it did it wouldnt just make a clicking sound. almost sounds like a fuse going out eat time. hmm

Nope,.... No lock holdin' it,... Probably corroded wirin' connections at the trim pump, 'n it's solenoids,...

Take the wires off, sand 'em shiny metal clean, put it back together, 'n try it,...

Did ya sand, 'n clean the wires ya just hooked up,..?? ya Should,....

Re: Battery Wiring Confusion

Yellow is the current standard color for Battery ground in the marine environment.
This is avoid confusion with the Black wires that are commonly used as AC Hot. That would get ugly fast!
In small boats, it makes little difference and you will still find many boats with Black used as Battery ground.

My 2012 boat has a factory installed Yellow Battery cable to the Engine block but Black going to the House Fuse panel. To avoid confusion in the future, wrap the last 6 inches of the wire with Yellow electrical tape so they are all the same color.

I believe the main change of color started in 2007.

my boat is a 2004 but this wire seems to be a factory wire. Iv attached a picture of the wires connected, could someone confirm they are correct.

For some reason and keep in mind all my terminals are clean because this boat has sat for a long time. I mean they have no build up on them what so ever. When i try to trim down i get a click and when i try to start the boat i get a click. I just put a new battery in the boat, so im stuck as to what this could be.

i assumed its fully charged since its new and the sticker said its build date was march 2015. This was also the case when i would attempt to jump my old battery.

Re: Battery Wiring Confusion

Wires have two ends. Check the other ends for Integrity.

Place a Voltmeter on the Battery POSTS , NOT the Battery Clamps, when attempting to start.
If it stays above 12v, that is not the problem spot.

Move one Lead of the Meter at a time, to each connection, towards the Starter and Block.
Positive and Ground wires both, must have integrity.
When you find the location where the voltage drops suddenly, that is where the problem is.

...The sticker said its build date was March 2015...
Never try to use a battery before it is built.

The Acid was put in the battery at the Retailers, not at the Factory.
They can always use a charge when brand new.
But... They should still have enough capacity to start the engine.

The wiring looks correct to me. Two POS and Two NEG.

Using the Screw Posts is acceptable.
Many will suggest that WingNuts are NOT the prefered fasteners.
Lock washers and HEX Nuts make for a much more "Wrenchable" connection.

Also Note the Yellow Grounds.
