I own a bayliner 3055 year 2000. Have had for 1 week. Have a number of questions. Most important how does one set the battery switches when relying on just battery power?

Re: battery use

My switch has one two or both. I just use one. At least you will have the other to start your boat to get home on.

Re: battery use

Put it on Both when the engine is running to charge both of them, then switch to one.
Depends too how it is wired and if they are deep cycle or one deep cycle and one cranking battery.

Usually if it has one deep cycle that should be wired to run electronics, stereos, trolling motors,ect...

Re: battery use

If it has different batteries (deep cycle and cranking) you do NOT want to charge both at the same time. Use your largest amperage battery for your house battery and save the other for starting. Once you are running and if your switch is a Perko or rated to "make before break" (contact) you can switch to your other battery underway to charge it. This will charge it faster and fuller. Once charged and/or before anchoring, docking, etc. switch to your engine battery to top off the charge for restarting then back to your house battery when you stop. Always check and clean connections and put the largest cable on the battery first and work to the smallest on top of the "stack".

If you have 2 or more switches (one for each battery) make sure you switch to at least 2 on before you switch one off. DO NOT switch all off while engine is running. This can fry your electrics and electronics as the current past the diodes in the alternator has to have some where to go.
