When I turn my battery on it powers up all the gauges with the ignition key off. The engine will start using the key but will not shut off unless you turn the battery off. I discovered if I leave the orange wire off the starter it works fine. Not sure on the charging part as I am waiting on my new alternator.
My starter has two posts, three if you count the connection between the solenoid and the starter motor. the smaller post has a yellow/red wire (16 gauge to ignition i think). the large post has a battery cable, an 8-gauge red cable which looks like it goes to the circuit Breaker and an 8 gauge orange wire which is wire nutted into a 16 gauge faded purple. Large post also has a 100 amp fuse.
I know the alternator is bad as it only puts out 11.2 volts. could this be sending power to the ignition when the battery is on? Looked at #25 service manual wire diagram and i beleive the closest is on page 4E-4 (MCM 4.3L ALPHA ENGINE)
All this started when i replaced my engine coupler.
the engine is a1998 4.3 MerCruiser Engine Serial # 0L049610
Alpha I Gen II Sterndrive
Thank you for any help
