Hey everyone I picked up this min kota weedless wedge 70 pound thrust trolling motor for 30 bucks at a rummage sale and today I tried hooking it up to my batteries to see if it worked. I connected my 2 12 volt batteries and I did it correctly and I checked volts and yep I had 24. The trolling motor has a plug receptacle design where you can plug and unplug it easily without having to disconnect from battery terminals. I crimped on some alligator clips to the wires of the receptacle and made sure those passed the tug test and then with the trolling motor hooked up I connected the alligator clips to the batteries and a bunch of smoke and fire happened and melted part of my alligator clips. I checked battery volts and still had 24. I then unplugged the trolling motor and clipped the alligator clips back on again this time with the trolling motor NOT connected to them and nothing happened no sparks and the ends of the alligator clips measured 24 volts. It seems the trolling motor is causing a short? In conclusion when I connect the trolling motor to battery it causes smoke and fire but when I disconnect it and then connect it again no trolling motor connected nothing happens. Both batteries 100% charged. What’s happening? The 2 photos are the receptacle connections on the trolling motor if anyone was wondering.
