Actually, I know quite a bit about automotive diesel and gas engines. I have never messed with a boat engine until my dad died this spring, leaving the family with a totally disassembled 20 foot Lowe pontoon boat with a 40 horse Merc from 1996.
I've done pretty well getting the bits and pieces of the boat back together. But now comes the hard part--the controls and motor.
I have a few specific questions.
Where do the battery wires, the ones that power the starter, connect to the engine?
I was missing the key, and had one made. I understand that there should have been a key code on the switch in the control housing, but it was missing so I just went to a locksmith. However, I think he didn't do a very good job. I have to push the key in to turn it. When I turn it, it operates the choke, but doesn't crank the engine. This lack-of-cranking could be due to the fact that the key is not turning over far enough to engage the starting circuit, or because I don't have the starter wired properly.
I have photos of the current state of affairs if that would help anyone.
Also, where does the fuel line connect to the engine?
Can anyone tell me about fuel requirements... fuel mix, gas only, oil in a separate container somewhere?
