basic help with 77 Johnson

First of all, I am new to the forum so hi all. I did read the "new posters" post and I don't mean to upset anyone but I will probably ask some questions that if I looked hard enough I could probably find the answers to. But frankly I have not the time or the patience to spend more than about 20 minutes on the internet. I just bought my first boat and I don't know much. I hooked up the battery and all I am getting is the clicking. Nothing else happens. What all could this be?? The battery is brand new. Also wondering if anyone could tell me how to manually start the motor. I know these are probably silly questions for you guys, but I could really use some help. Thanks. By the way it is an 85hp 1977 Johnson.

I have manual that covers the Evinrude 85, 1977. Nobody gets upset so don't worry. And welcome to the wild world of outboard deciphering.<br /><br />Alright I'm gonna scratch my head and thing of the simple stuff. Ok......first thing clean up the battery cable connections and make sure they're TIGHT. It is highly recommended that you don't use the wingnuts, but use nylon locknuts instead. And DO NOT reverse the cables, you'll fry the rectifier, which is what charges the battery when running. <br /><br />Make sure all connections to the starter are clean and tight also, as well as the starter solenoid. <br /><br />There's an emergency rope inside the engine cover, should be in a little baggy. You'll have fun trying to pull start a cold engine. It's not that bad if it's already warmed up. <br /><br />email me mikeyzx2@peoplepc.com I can take pictures of mine to point things out, or give you technicals on that motor. Remove and clean the NEGATIVE battery terminal on the engine block.
