I think I found a kicker for my Starcraft. A 55' Johnson 10 horse.

Story;
Son was selling this for his Dad. The Uncle had borrowed it 10 years ago and never used it, just sat in the pole-barn. I guess he finally brought it back and Dada tells son "sell it I don't need it anymore". Son puts it up on CraigsList for $140, yours truly offers him $120 and we have a deal.

Bonus Part of Story;
Sweet part of the deal is there is a pressure tank in the garage and goes with the motor. :D This is the old two line system so these old pressure tanks are needed to run this era of motor. I asked and viola he pulled it out of the garage.

This motor turns over and looks complete. The one bad thing is the shifter lever is broken. I need a new one or need to make one on the CNC mill at work. I'd rather buy one.

I don't know if this will do the job for it is not a long shaft motor. I don't think there is anyway to convert it to a long shaft. The motor spoke to me so I bought it. Mama spoke to me also, she has no appreciation for classic marine equipment. I had to have it and if it fits the Starcraft cool, if not I will rebuild it and use it ..............somewhere.

I need a 12 foot Starcraft boat now. Yep I do, for the smaller rivers and the Salmon run on the Pere Marquette or the Grand or St. John Rivers. Hey I've all ready got the motor.:D:

Johnson 10 hp
Model QD-16
original list price 314.50
bore 2 3/8
stroke 1 7/8
hp 10
rpm 4000
gas tank cap. 6 gal.
spark plug j6j
piston displacement cu in 16.16
weight 67 1/2 lbs

That's a nice find. As you can see, I have the manual for that engine.
Johnson service manual, tenth edition. It covers Johnson motors from 1922, to 1964.

If you can find a manual similar, you should buy it, but if you require some information till then, just ask.

I couldn't pass it up, I like the looks of them old motors. If it works it will compliment the old Starcraft nicely.

Bob I do need a manual. Where do I start searching? Are they hard to find? I haven't even looked yet.

Hope everyone is well.

Funny you should mention AOMCI. I was looking for a boat and stumbled across Iboats and the Starcraft forum. I bought a Starcraft tinnie.

I was looking for a kicker motor and I ran across AOMCI. I think I'll quit while I'm ahead. I'm afraid I'll run across some muskie fishing website and need to buy all kinds of big rod n reel combos, large special nets, huge bucktails and body baits, side imaging.............. A guy's got to be real careful, lots of bad stuff out on the internet.:p

Later guys.

Funny you should mention that. It's been known to happen.

Bwana that's a sweet old OB, nice find:D

I have a '55 5.5hp that looks identical to yours and I love it to death. These old OMC motors just keep on chuggin if they are well maintained. I love mine on my little 12' but I'm considering using it as a kicker on my 16' SS too.

I may switch it back and forth this summer and give her lots of running time to keep her happy:)

Here's a little video of the 5.5 in action to get ya all pumped up to get out on the water. Idles right down for trolling nicely:)

Too cool Huron Angler. That does look just like my motor! This confirms the need for a 12 foot starcraft rig. I'm pumped n ow. If I lose inspiration I'll watch this video, and North Beach's video of him running the Liquid Limo around.

I hear these motors are super reliable. You can't kill them, unless you forget to put oil in the gas. I now need to quit obtaining projects and start working on them.:p

It's warm out now so next weekend I'll pull the cover off of the boat. I'll asses the overall condition and do an oil change and tune up to the 3.0 liter. I hope the block is not cracked, I bought in January so there was nothing I could do. I hope the old guy winterized it before he passed away.:eek:

I found mine on ebay several years ago. The only other one I had seen before that was in marine tech school. I won mine with a bid of 125.00. It's paid for itself many times over.

I aquired a 57' 5.5 evinrude some years ago. Without that book I doubt I'd have done much with that engine. It was in like new condition, but no spark and I was sure it needed a water pump, compression was fine. It still had the original spark plugs in it and they were still good.

A point of interest is that the power head needed to be pulled up to disconect the shift shaft so the lower unit could be dropped for water pump replacement. It took a late model water pump, 6 hp I think, that fit perfectly.

I had 200.00 invested in that engine and sold it for 500.00
