when i was a youngen i used to use spinners. i had too many casts where the line would bird nest up on the cast and just loop all around. i found it easer to remove the bird nests from the baitcasters than the spinners. been using bait casters since....

The bait casters are so much better IMO because you have the best access to the spool, line, drag, control of each as you hands fit well around it, as well as the ability and most important, to feel the action, bites, or whatever is going on at the end of you line...

This is the most important part of bass fishing for those tournament guys... The spool is right there inside you hands and the line exiting the spool is easily able to run over one of your fingers for even extra sensitivity...

It has it's drawbacks though with the backlash deal but when you are finese fishing it is the best no doubt... And even top water there is no drawback....

Open face spinning reels, you can cast a light lure into a hula hoop at 40 yards. No backlash problems especially casting into the wind. Line is wound evenly on the spool, flows out smoothly, but hard to stop it to cut a cast short. You can shoot docks with 'em.

Little bit of slack will give you trouble though. Birds nests happen on these if you get just a tiny bit of twist, then a little slack, it'll wrap around the handle, under the spool, a real headache. Sometimes it wraps up under the spool and you don't notice at first, then you got real problems (no pun intended).

With a baitcaster you can hit a postage stamp on a fence at 30 yards. When playing a big fish if the drag's too light you can use your thumb on the spool to tighten down or loosen up.

Like kclost says, keep your fingers on the line during retrieve especially with weightless soft plastics means improved strike detection.

If you're vertical jigging and get bit on the drop with it still in freespool, you can clamp down on the spool with your thumb to set the hook. Done that many times.

Every "Serious" Bass fisherman has a good selection of both types of reels and rods on hand at all times. ;)

Re: Bait Cast advice

I too am a baitcaster novice. A few years ago I bought a baitcaster, hated it, left in in a box up until today. I stuck it on a 7' rod, and spent the afternoon playing with it. I am to the point where I am getting about as far as my covetted open face spinners, and very few birdnests. I have yet to see an advantage to the baitcaster, but I am going to stick with it, the tourny guys use them for a reason, and I can't stand to see fishin' gear going to waste. I'll still keep my trusty open faced spinner handy, it has a lot of fishlips under its belt and has not failed me yet...

Once they become second nature, it's a whole new game. I FEEL like I can cast into a beer bottle from 30ft. A GOOD baitcaster is very precise and gives you total control--allows you to adjust midcast if necessary (with a very steady thumb). The spinners just feel kinda clumsy to me

I think I will stick with my Daiwa Goldcast III's. Oscillating spool for level wind of the line. Rotating line pick up pin. Nice drag. 3 sizes. Upwind, down wind, overhand, underhand, shooting jigs, hand it to anyone and they can fish with it.

Re: Bait Cast advice

You need both reels for diffrent things. I have 4 spinning reels and 6 bait casters. It took me a year to make my self use a bait caster. Then I did and became twice the fisherman. Though I cant stop to fish without pulling my 6'6 allstar with a spinning reel out, I will die with that set up beside me.
