I've got a 2014 Merc Outboard. I don't think the cowl was ever cleaned. What would you use to clean/buff/wax the plastic to restore some shine to it?

Clean it with a strong cleaner first, then see how faded it is. If not bad then a good auto polish should work. Watch the decals, they can be peeled right off with certain cleaners and polishes. If really bad, peel off the decals, sand and repaint. New decals are availiable. I just use a simple spray on car polish/wax. Easy on, easy off and it keeps everything like new. Only takes a few minutes to do. Also use it on my aluminum hull, makes the crud from the water come off much easier.

Just clean it off with anything....Car wash, dishsoap, fantastic, etc .Just clean it off. Then try a small section with some cleaner wax or polish to see if any shine cones back up. I have seen quite a few Mercs with badly faded motor covers especially on the rear side.Worst case is you will need to repaint it.Charlie
