bad Stator 1984 merc 90?

just pulled flywheel off and stator had burn hole in it, is this likly to cause no spark? and do they sometime just burn out , or is there likely a cause? Thanks Caleb

Thanks for the info Im gonna start with replacing it, so then the stator is where the spark will orriginate from?
