Re: Bad Ramp Experience

Ran into this situation this past weekend. Another guy and I were waiting in line and a fellow had his rig on the ramp, messing with the boat and such. We simply walked up to him and asked him if he knew that prep. was supposed to be done in the staging area so people who were ready to launch could do so - and that he could take his place in line when he was ready. He said sorry, pulled off the ramp and did just that. No big deal. No yelling, no making fun of the guy, just a guy happy to learn a new lesson and a couple of us happy that we could launch and go.

That takes people skills. Some of us don't have that. If I had tried that I'd have chosen the wrong words, I can guarantee it.

Ain't that the truth!

But on the other side of the coin, even when I have found the right words and was polite, the other guy did not have people skills.

No matter what you say or how you say it, some people do not like nor want to be corrected or told they are in the wrong. Instantly go on the deffensive.
I have learned over the years what type of person I will offer help to and which kind I will not. You look long enough and you will be able to tell the one that wants to learn and know. Those are the people worth my time. The others just take up my time.

So you'd opt for just being pissed and thinking the guy's a jerk rather than having a decent conversation and asking him to move out of the way and explaining why? Now that makes no sense at all.

Every time I have tried to help, I have been yelled at. So NO I dont try to have a conversation with these know it all morons anymore. And trust me, it looks like I am helping the dummy, but in reality I am helping the poor folks waiting behind the dummy, by getting him out of the way.

You cant talk to people like this. There are some people that just do not learn, or are so inconsiderate, that they choose not to. I bet when he gets the boat out of the water he will get on an interstate doing 15 under the speed limit in the passing lane. Or will get 30 items at the grocery store and try to check out at the 10 items or less lane. Inconsiderate, oblivious people just dont care.

Guaranteed you did not forever change the clown's behavior. Just for that day.

Don't forget to go to your nearest ramp this holiday weekend.
All the ignorant, holiday weekend only boaters will be trying to launch and load.

Always a good time for some laughs and sometimes fights too.

At the ramps we frequent there is not a prep area at a single one. The realestate is so tight at most it is a struggle to even get into a spot. I am getting the sense our ramps in MN are different than most. Generally only one lane and one courtesy dock. You load up at home and ready the lines and fenders/remove the straps and cover while you are in line. Most times you have to keep getting back in the truck and move forward as the line moves then get back out and continue.

I could understand a new boater too exited to hit the ramp that they did t think about all the prep work but this guy sounds like an oblivious moron-and his crew sounds lazy as - - - -

It's possible to talk to one boater and have them willing to learn something new but this case doesn't seem like that...

Re: Bad Ramp Experience

Sounds like my dad. He can be inconsiderate and sometimes I am embarrassed to be around him but the world turns when he says so.

He is getting better though. He used to never listen to me but as I get wiser he is listening to me more and more. Unfortunately the poor guy is getting a little senile so maybe thats why he is listening.

He will yell at anyone who tries to talk to him at the launch...unless there bikini clad.

My solution to these idiots is to bring it down to there level. Try exiting a ramp when my truck/trailer are blocking your exit...ahhhh yeah now that all your **** is loaded you want to get on the lake do you? Kinda hard when my truck is preventing this isnt it...welcome to the world of EVERYONE IN LINE BEHIND YOU!

Or the a-hole who pulls his boat out of the water and is blocking the the launch lane and procedes to towel dry his fiberglass jet boat or runabout off because he doesn't want water spots on the exterior.i'm a firm believer in the 3 darts and get a ticket or your *** kicked!!!!for each infraction of basic accepted boating ettiquette you get stuck with a dart.3 darts and your out!!!!!" the sturgeon general".

Re: Bad Ramp Experience

I watched a guy at our local ramp back his trailer in by himself, and take off on the boat, leaving the trailer in the water and truck at the ramp.

We went out for 3 hours, came back, and his truck and trailer were STILL in the water!!!:confused::confused:

On the way out, I informed the cops, just in case he was taking it for a quick test spin and got stalled out and stranded offshore. Nope. As they were ticketing his truck, he pulled back up, nearly 4 hours later, to load up and head home.

Luckily the ramp is easily big enough for 6 boats at a time. So he didn't tie up the only free ramp in the county.

I was a dive instructor and Capt for a Manatee tour company for 5 years, we loaded and unload our pontoons off trailers everyday, sometime 2-3 times. The things ive seen at the boat ramp is unbeliveale! I saw a 80 yo woman yanked into the water when her husband gave her a rope and then backed his boat down the last 10 feet at 40mph and slammed on the breaks, she didnt let go! then he get out and starts yelling at her as I'm pulling her on my boat! I've seen 4 guys going at it at once, rolling on the ground! trucks and trailer under water! Ive seen it all. It seams to me when you put a boat on trail and take it to a ramp, it drains the common sence out most people! not realy sure why!

Re: Bad Ramp Experience

Happened to me coming in. I was wanting to pull my 22 ft trophy out. It had been in for a year. Pulled it around to the ramp. Here sits a 19 foot ski boat on the ramp side of the dock, blocking the ramp. I Idle up slowly to let them know I was waiting for them to get out of the way so I could retrieve. Get this - they weren't loading or unloading anything. Dad had to take a crap and parked it there even though there was a decent sand beaching point or he could've docked on the outside portion of the ramp. For the next 20 minutes, I and others, sat there while dad did his bizness. no one could launch or retrieve. When He finally came out, I was idling about 15 feet away amd hollared, ' If everthing came out ok would you mind unblocking the ramp so everyone else can take a crap too! '. He wasn't happy..

Re: Bad Ramp Experience

Welcome to a typical day at my local launch. I have pulled more broken down, wont start, no drainplug, dead batt, overloaded boats back to the ramp than i can count. 95% of them spent 20+ mins holding me up or asking for help. Someday they will pay it fwd i hope.

Re: Bad Ramp Experience

Without a well seasoned boater to help me out, i may very well have been the type to launch and load the boat. Just simply not knowing that it was bad form. I was lucky and got to start boating with a person that was well versed with boats and the water ways. Not everyone has this ability.

However, i have this major problem of feeling i'm in the way of everyone. If i'm doing something new to me, i try to look around and see what other people are doing. If i was in line and everyone in front of me(or most anyway) were prepping their boats before they put in, i would follow their lead and load up my boat as well.

Saturday this past labor day weekend...we ran out of beer at noon, hung out til 2, burned to a crisp. Headed back to ramp, and a brand new Ford F250 is IN the water NOSE FIRST!!! Pulled out by tow truck, but cops took another 1.5 hours to do the crime scene investigation and crime scene photos.

All 6 ramps were blocked by the cops and all.

No bimini top, so we ended up pretty well sunburned.

It's called being aware of your surroundings and it's a good thing. Most of these ramp antics wouldn't even occur if people would just look around and see how things are being done. I'm like you, I have anxiety going into any situation where I don't already "know the drill". It can be something as simple as ordering from a new restaurant.

Re: Bad Ramp Experience

I think its a little bit more than just being educated. It is common courtesy and being aware of your surroundings. You wouldnt stop in the middle of a busy road blocking traffic, to load up your car for 20 or 30 minutes would you??? The OP said there was about 20 boats waiting, and the guy actually asked him if he was waiting on him to get out of the way. That is not an education thing, it is a matter of being aware of your surroundings and common sense.

How come they call it COMMON courtesy when it's so darn rare..

I'm pretty new at this. and I feel like I am holding people up when I launch and recover. I do my best to get the heck out of the way even if that means going to the end of the dock and tying off there. (that leaves tons of room for others to launch) and get my truck and trailer the heck out of the way..

I mean stuff happens. but What the OP was talking about was just RUDE! Pray he forgot to put the plus in...
