I just got a 19?? Evinrude Sportwin from a friend. I have no idea what model (It is spray painted because it is used on duckboat). I think it is a 9.9. It has not been used in as while because of a broken pull cord, but it used to run fine. I fixed the pull cord and had it running briefly, but after about 30 seconds it shut off and wont re start (then I had to row back to the launch and missed hunting). I also put in brand new plugs. I dont know if it is running on a lean mix or not because the little nob has no writing With starter fluid in the carborator it will run, until that is gone. My other 9.9 did the exact same thing (had to row and miss hunting again), on the same tank of gas. Do you think that is my problem? What do I do to get the old gas out of the line and motor? What else should I check for? I need this baby for late goose season!

I need help getting the old gas out of the motor and the line so i can get the new stuff in.

If that doesn't work I will bring it in for repair.

I am frustrated. I dont think it should be anything too major.

Thanks,
C-Villy

Re: Bad gas?

don't use starting fluid on a 2 stroke engine, it has no oil in it. get a spray bottle and use premix gas in it. and yes bad gas could well be the problem with both engines. If it/they have been sitting for a while you may also want to change the impeller, don't want it overheating on you. what kind of tank do you have? that will help to get the info on cleaning it out. how old is the gas? how does it smell? you may also need to clean the carb/s now.

Re: Bad gas?

Alright, thanks guys.

Any tips on how to get the old gas out of the line? I have already disposed of the old stuff in the tank. I think it was the gas.

I might sound dumb, but whats the impeller and where do I find it?

Thanks for the help!

Cvilly

Re: Bad gas?

You really should pick up a manual cvilly. There's tons of help here but a book will give you something to look at.

Re: Bad gas?

The impeller is located in the water pump in the lower unit, it provides water circulation for cooling the motor. You should probably see about getting an OEM service/shop manual for your motor if you plan on working on it. You'll need to know the year/hp of the motor in order to get the right manual and find the right parts for the motor.

Try locating the model and serial #'s and post them here then we can tell you what you have. If you can't locate them on the tag on the transom mount, there should be an aluminum freeze plug located on the top of the motor block, its about the size of a quarter or so. The numbers can be found on the plug. ;)

Re: Bad gas?

Try pumping the primer bulb with the line disconnected if its got an external tank, might have to insert a small nail in to open up the little ball valve as you do it.

Re: Bad gas?

you never stated what kind of tank you have. if you have as remote tank slip a small nail in the end of the gas line and pump the bulb on button which ever you have. be sure to catch what comes out and dispose properly.
