I asked this question on the bottom of another post and I am still hoping for some clues to what I did wrong.
When I removed from the gearbox the drive shaft things were fine but during the night the gearbox fell a couple of inches which turned the prop.
Problem is now I cant get the shaft back into the box.How much force is required or can the gear that takes the shaft move out of alignment with the hole for the shaft.
How do I fix this, after all this work the pump housing and impeller are like new.

I'll bet you are talking about a 4hp weedless, aren't you? Hold the gearcase so the drive shaft is horizontal and the prop shaft pointing up. Gently insert the drive shaft while jiggling it and the prop. It should align and slip right in. OR.....is it with the prop shaft point down?? One or the other will work, I forget.

Re: b4186 shaft back into gearbox

no it wasnt the 4hp weedless but the idea worked Tried both and by holding the prop horizontal to the ground a little jiggling and the prop began to turn smoothly and the shaft slid in beautifully. Now I wont worry so much when I take it back out to fit the water pump impeller and housing. And I wont forget the key its so small easy to overlook. Is there a gasket betweeen between the impeller housing or just use a gasket sealer like permatex or similar.

Many thanks for the help

If there are any parts going together metal to metal on a water pump job I've always used 3M-847 sealer.
