Re: Average number of miles you drive per year

I know we pack on about 30k miles per year between two vehicles. But, I'm not sure how that data would be collected here in TN. We don't report annually to insurance or at registration, and outside of the big cities and connecting counties there's not much emission testing.

In NY, mileage is reported at annual safety inspections, on titles when they change hands, and registrations when a car is bought/sold.

My driving is too eratic. I might have a month with nearly no driving and then have one that would eat the entire 7,500 annual miles allowed.

I got the discount almost a year ago & reported my mileage to the ins. co for the discount. Then got rid of that car in May, and reported the mileage of the "new" car then, so I expect it will be at least another year until they ask me for mileage again.:)

Travel grew about 47% during the 1960's, another 38% in the 1970's, and another 37% in the 1980's, and another 26% in the 1990's.

But yet it's still "12,000 miles".

Impossible.

In NY, mileage is reported ... on titles when they change hands, and registrations when a car is bought/sold.

We do that too ... it's the annual stuff we don't do except in the big municipalities.

I would agree with you though, I think average miles driven has gone way up. Especially with air travel being so flaky in the last couple of years.

Re: Average number of miles you drive per year

In the last few years before I retired I drove between 60,000 and 80,000 miles a year. I was doing two shifts a day 60 miles away.

Today I probably don't drive over 8,000.

I quit flying commercial when they quit treating me like a customer.

Re: Average number of miles you drive per year

42 miles a day, round trip to work, that does not included the several trips a year back and forth between here and my wife's family in OR. So I drive 225 a week for work and various trips around the area to go to the store, so just getting back and forth to work, 225 x 50 = 11250, add in the other trips and I am over 20K a year minimum. My current Ford Explorer has 264K on it, My Grand Cherokee has 194K on it, the Aerostar van is sitting at 192K, but I did just by a 91 Ford Pickup with LOW Miles, it has 109K!

Re: Average number of miles you drive per year

I bought my truck almost exactly 4 years ago with 40k on it. Just recently rolled 100k. That gives me an average 15k per year or so. That number is probably much more than that now. For the first year and a half I worked 5 miles from home and lived 2 miles from my parents (go there at least 3 times a week for stuff). Now I live 25 miles from work and 17 from the parents.

Re: Average number of miles you drive per year

Well, lets see how my math is.....

112 miles round-trip to work.

12hr shift, so 3 days one week= 336 miles

4 days the next week= 448 miles

So 784 miles every two weeks, or 1568 miles per month.

That adds up to 18,816 miles a year, not counting extra shifts. Or any running around or special trips on the off days.

And to top that off, the vehicle has over 270k on the clock

I have been hearing the same thing since I was a boy 35, years ago - 12K. I don't drive near as much as I use to because of fuel cost, and the damn traffic. I once drove 80k in 7, months! Now I only take work 20, miles or so from home because I don't want to commute
for more than an hour.

I really don't think it matters a whole lot, I mean if you have a wreak is the insurance company going to say we are not paying because you said you drove 12,000 miles a year and by our records you drove 15,000 this year?

I've never heard of a claim being denied for that, or of rates going up because they discovered you drove more than 12,000? Has anyone had this happened to them?

Oh by the way in answer to the thread question.....me 40,000+ per year, wife 18,000 per year.

Yeah, I got a 5 or 10% discount or something like that, and had to give them my odometer reading when they gave it to me. They said I would have to report my mileage to them in a year to keep the discount.

Yes,

I had the Hartford(AARP) raised my rate from $350 every 6 months to over $800 every six months and the only reason they gave me was my mileage, we had a very bad year with relatives and seemed like every time we turned around we were traveling somewhere for a funeral. I quickly changed to Allstate and the rate went back down and they said they didn't care how many miles I drove!

Re: Average number of miles you drive per year

Very intresting to know....I State Farm, but they didn't offer me a discount for mileage, so it didn't enter into the equation (good rate though). But since I've know of several compaines with this discount was wondering if they actually check on it.....so now I know, yes they do.

Thanks for the replys, guys...

They didn't offer it, I called and asked if they had such a thing. Insurance companies never offer anything! :p
