I recently got my car insurance renewal. Since I retired, they give me a discount for driving less than 7500 miles annually. I don't yet know if I'm actually under that figure since I haven't had the discount very long, I just requested it a number of months ago.
The thing that got me thinking was their statement on the bill that the national average of miles driven is 12,000/year. It seems to me that the insurance industry has been using that figure for 25 years or more and I don't see any way that is accurate. I think people drive way more now than ever before.
I wonder if they change their formula so it perpetually comes to an answer of 12,000 miles annually, or if they are just using vintage data.
