I have a 02 Johnson 25 and I am having problems when the motor is running at wot it sounds like it has a load on it then the motor will jump to a higher rpm but no speed is added I had a new clutch put in my prop 8 months ago and I thought it might have slipped again but I got a new prop from a buddy that was the same size and pitch and it does the same the motor is on a jack plate 3in high with a 3in set back on a 16 48 but I was having this problem before I installed it someone had told me that the dog gear could be slipping but I'm not sure my kids and I would like any input into how I can fix this problem

Re: at a loss

Possible ventilation issue? Does it look like there is a lot of air behind the prop when this happens? It's a long shot, but a way to rule something out. If you get up on plane it could be too high or there could be exhaust coming out in front of the prop. I've dealt with both of these issues on different motors.

If it's exhaust causing it then it could be a small break in the base gasket, but then, I don't know this motor at all.

This is something new that hasn't been happening all along?? It sure sounds like a ventilation problem (air around prop). Not unusual when motor is jacked up and out. Darn near to be expected.
