Where do the holes usually end up in that Y?

I'm going to try and get a mirror under there to see if I can see clearly where the leak is coming from.

I also do see some water coming up from the top of the Y seal, and bubbles from the exhaust.

depends if that is what caused the leak. it will depend where the shutter lands. pull the elbows and look

They sometimes wear a hole in them when pieces of the flappers fall in, but assume you would have seen it

Well just a quick update.
I located a set of freshly resurfaced cylinder heads locally for $335.

These are not the later vortec heads, but the same ones it currently has.

He said it had fresh springs, guides, and seals to go along with it.
and it has been checked for cracks.

He also said this was to go into a boat he was fixing up, but it all came to a stop once he found a cracked block.

He said that they came from a S10 blazer donor, and with the dex cool looking coating inside of the cooling passages, I'm feeling pretty safe to say these didn't come from the cracked boat block.

Using a proper straight edge I have; I can confirm that they are 100% flat. (y)
I'm curious what the chambers CC out to, however I doubt I'll bother going that far.

I'm planning to yank a random intake and exhaust valve to see what was done, and the condition of the new seals.
from there they are going on with a fresh set of gaskets.

All of our lakes around here are 100% full, and calling to me.

Image from one just up the road from me on Monday, it's about a 15min drive from my house. :p

Time to get this done and out there.
