After a bunch of trigonometry (SOH CAH TOA :D ) I figured out that there is no way I can fit my boat as well as my wifes car in the garage... GRRRRRRR...

I'm going to have to try it with the boat in hand as well... but the math says 'no'...

Sean

Add a carport to the front of the garage. Or trade boats with me. I have a little 10' john boat you can lean up against the wall. Ill trade even. :D :D :D :D :D

I made an effort to get my boat to fit.

I went to a welding shop and $330.00 later, I had a perfect removable tongue made. It saved me 4'.

Re: Arrghhh Garage Size...

wait till you get the boat and try it, but I knew a guy that made a little door, in his garage door, that he could open and it would close. His door was the type that swung though, I bet you could do it to a regular garage door though!

Sean.... you are thinking ahead!! After about one year of "boat ownership" you will get sick.... with two foot fever!!!! That's the disease that strikes boaters (I had it!) to get a bigger boat! Remember JAWS "we got to get a bigger boat" well he was just a person with 2 foot fever!

Sounds like you need to build a major addition onto the garage.... not to fit this boat but to fit the next one!!! :D

Hey what would be cheaper??? A new garage or a smaller car for the wife? ;)

Best of luck with the new toy!

Bob

Cut out the back of the garage were the motor can go through and build a little dog house over the motor.

I can't believe this.

Suggestions about hacking up a house/garage to make a boat fit? aaargh, aaargh, aaargh=HUH!

Gee Whiz, spend a buck and make the boat fit the garage. I did, it works great. $330.00 $$ later I got a removable tongue that gained me 4'.
Plus, the tongue installed by the welder is far stronger than the original.

Re: Arrghhh Garage Size...

While you are enlarging the garage for the next, bigger, boat, you might as well add on for the new tow vehicle also. Now we have 2 cars and a boat. But wait, you won't be satisfied running around in a truck, so you need another Jeep. And don't forget the storage!

Go ahead, while you are at it, make the garage a 3 door garage and one side needs to be long enough to back the boat in and left overnight while still attached to the tow vehicle!

Trust me, I used to sell used cars! I ended up doing just that - now my 2,000sqft home also has 2,000sqft of garages and porches! Go for it! You won't be sorry.

Aren't boats cheap and fun! Look at all the projects they provide!

Kenneth,

There isn't a boat out there, (on a legit. trailer) that is over eight feet wide. Leaving out supersize/overwide boats that are well stated as being-"wide".

I have never seen a garage door that wasn't eight feet wide.

I've got a 15' 3" Whaler in a 17' garage, with a "wide" stance trailer that measures 7' 10" on the outside of the fender wells..

Where there is a will, there is a way. Yes, I had to get my "JUNK" out of the way. The other garage is clean with two cars in it. Imagine that, a car in a garage?

Kenneth, Don't make the doors to fit the garage, make the garage to fit the doors! That's how it makes it wider!

DJ, I got 3 cars in my garage, and 2 motorcycles, 1 boat, some furniture, a work bench, a refrig and freezer, 20 feet of shelving units, a bicycle, a slop sink, .... And I can even walk around in it! I love my garage!

EE, build a bigger garage, it isn't going to get any better!

Sorry to say, but there are TONS of boats out there on "legit" trailers that are over 8'. 8' 6" to be exact (102"). That is the legal width limit (Without a permit or Wide Load Sign)in most, if not all states. Most all semi trailers on the roads today are 102" trailers. My 22' boat has a 102" beam with a 102" trailer sitting under it. This is very common with I/O runabouts, and small trailerable cruisers.

So, if your have an 8' door, it just isn't going to fit. And at 9', that leaves less than 3" on each side to play with. Less than 3", because a garage door is typically the full width you ask for. A 9' door is 9', and is usually framed in about an inch narrower so the door rests against the framing instead of just the weather stripping. And the weather stripping will likely use up about an inch of space. So if you were to measure that actual usable width of a 9' door, you would probablay only have 105" to 106".

Any garage that is going to be used for more than parking a car, should have 10' or bigger doors.

And it wouldn't hurt to measure the width of your new boat, and your garage doors......before you bring it home. ;) After all, that extra little bit of boat may cost you alot if you add on to your garage, or pay for storage.

OK, I'll buy that. I thought maybe he didn't have doors and it was just a wide bay. My inlaws have a house that was built about 11 years ago, they bought it 3 months ago. It has a single 15 foot door. My garage is a tree that leaks sap on everything. :( My shop or oversize storage building is 20X30 with a 7 foot door. I can just barely squeeze my truck in, well if it wasn't packed so full of crap that is.

Re: Arrghhh Garage Size...

Take the post out between the 2 garage doors Put in new custom door full width park the boat in the middle and wifes car and your new truck in the street. Priortize, boat #1 ;)

Re: Arrghhh Garage Size...

since neither of my boats would fit in my garage, I installed a 20'x26' carport inside my privacy fence. Problem solved. Wife's car and F-150 in the garage, 2 boats under the carport, and if there is a forecast for hail, I can easily push my fishing boat around a bit and fit my compact truck under there as well.

Sadly, my '99 SCab F-150 barely fits. I have to remove the drop hitch to close the door

Who came up with a garage that short anyway given the size of many vehicles these days?
