Good deal that you walked away (yeah, not the first "party" I'm late for) I agree with all that was said above. My question would have been, what is the dealers version of "rebuilt". Doesn't matter to you now that the sale was cancelled

If you don't want to worry about that kind of grief ever again, strongly consider not buying an I/O boat, you will be far better off with a late model boat with an outboard, especially in that size range.
Less maintenance
Safer
Better performance
Yes initial cost is more but well worth it.

Agreed, for so many years I thought that "the way to go" was an I/O but then the realization of having the engine taking up floor space and STILL having the "outboard" hanging off the back. I'm still trying to figure out why some having 5 or 6 outboards on their boats, could it be the "Bass Tourney" mindset of the faster boat wins

I am always nervous about the time intervals between . . .

Inspections/acceptance of the boat,
delivery of the cash,
and taking physical possession of the boat.

The time between the inspections and taking physical possession is where things can go wrong. It is best to make sure that anything needed to be done during those time periods is done.

As far as inspections/trials . . . I often put more emphasis on the sea trial and the mechanical (engines) inspections. The only boats that I've bought without survey/sea trial/engine inspections/testing are sailboats.

The only way an I/O is the way to go:
boat is old enough not to have complex and expensive cat converter exhaust
owner knows and understand GM small block engines, can deal with difficult access and extra maintenance required by the I/O design and can do much of their own work
Any other situation such as owner doesn't want to or can't do own work, owner lives in a climate with freezing weather and has to winterize, owner wants smaller boat but with enough space inside, the outboard wins.
Yes it cost more initially and sticks up in the stern, and you don't have a true swim platform in most cases. But to me, I honestly can't see buying another I/O for myself, unless its a cruiser style boat, with a big wide open engine compartment, easy access, etc.

Also agree with this, I didn't realize that newer I/O have cats now. Doing my own work isn't a problem, retired here and I've been turning my own wrenches since I first started riding bicycles

Agreed. We just left the dealership and they wouldn’t even come down a penny on the deal. Stating that the replacement engine was costing them so much. (Not our problem) I was surprised that they wouldn’t come down a thousand or two or even offer extended service warranty.
stupidity needs to hurt.....

sounds like the dealer has issues.

all that is available is reman bobtails since GM stopped making the Gen 1 4.3 years ago.

Dealer would have had to step up with a 5.7 or 6.2 long-tail to keep the price at $30k

Ask for receipts from the rebuild and I would go as far as asking for a warranty on the rebuild.
And I thought I was late for the party :unsure: LOL The last word I heard is that they had walked away from the deal because of all the issues with a "newly rebuilt engine" after being told the original engine was toast (I wanted to say something more "colorful" but don't know if that is allowed here)

The one thing that wasn’t mentioned in this discussion is that sometimes old (10 years in this case) low hour motors can have pitting and corrosion in the bores from sitting around with condensation in them. I’ve seen lots of low hour motors that never froze that have messed up bores; pitting, rust, or the perfect corroded imprint of the top compression ring a couple of inches from the deck. A rebuilt short block might be better than a 10 year old Mercruiser if this motor had any of that going on.

Soooo... are you going into the season with that boat with the rebuilt or having to go another route... Hopefully they gave you warranty and receipt to the rebuilt engine.

If you read though to the latest posts, they cancelled the sale and are onto the next opportunity.

I re read the thread and missed that part sorry. Good for them. 30k can buy a good amount of boat without issue.
