I am planning to repower my boat which currently has an old mercruiser 120 setup with type 1 drive (late sixties). My plan is to purchase a new/newer Volvo 3.0L/SX setup. Does the volvo 3.0L engine use the same motor mounts and locations as the mercruiser 3.0? I know they use the same block, but wasn't sure if the motor mounts were the same. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Nope, not any more. They are now using side mounts like a V6 or V8. This is so they have clearance for the new style serpentene (sp) belt, power steering pump etc.
But most boats came with stringers also. Did yours?

Thanks for the reply. I am not completely sure what you are asking, but I assume you are referring to the stringers in the hull? If so, yes, my hull has stringers running from bow to stern and some running accross at the back There is a rectangular shaped well in the back for the engine to sit in. It has a step at the front where the front motor mount sits. I wonder how the Volvo would fit? I guess I could always cut away and glass in as required. I was hoping it would set right in the same place. I am not sure how to post pictures or I would show you what my motor well looks like. Thanks again for the info - I am new to I/O's so it is much appreciated.

If the Volvo and the Mercruiser are of the same vintage the base engines are the same. It's all/most of the bolt on parts that are different. You could bolt all you Mercruiser parts on the Volvo engine. Many parts would have to be changed anyway to make the Volvo work.

I will be replacing the entire drive package (engine and outdrive) so the old stuff is going away. The volvo will be a late model probably less than five years old. I want the 3.0 with the SX outdrive. There is a boat wrecker close to me so I am waiting for a good one to come along...

Depending on the year, you may find one with the front mount. The side mount 3.0L engines is VERY new, I just don't know exactly when they stopped using the front mount all together. For a few years, you could get either.

That is good to know. I will try to find one that has the front mount to make my life easier. I guess it will depend on what year that change was made. I would like to get something fairly new. The wrecker gets a lot of insurance boats that are basically brand new. They had one in there last week that rolled down the guy's driveway and into a tree. It was a brand new Four Winns that the guy had just brought home from the lot. It had a Volvo setup, but unfortunately it was a 4.3L. That would be nice to have, but my boat is only rated for 160hp ('67 Thunderbird cathedral hull). Thanks again for the help.
