Are thermostats needed in outboards?

Are thermostats really needed in South Florida ? I'm currently running a 95 Yamaha Pro 150 on a 18' Hewes Redfisher. I was wondering instead of changing them, can I just leave them out? Any help in this situatuion would be appriciated.

Don't do it. The Tstat equalizes the head temp, keepeng it from warping. <br />And as a sage (i think it was Dhadley) put it, "They would save a bundle on the per- unit cost,if they weren't needed,and leave them out when they made it".<br />I learned that here myself.

Ditto on that.It's a safe bet they wouldn,t put them there if they weren't needed.Same as in your car.

Thanks for all the great info. The chart was interesting. I'm off to the Yamaha dealer to replace my originals. Keep up the great work.
