Re: Are the WalMart hitches any good?
My bad, late night typing. What I meant to say was that I bought a drawbar AND coupler from Harbor Freight for the trip. (My old trailer coupler and tongue were bent, so I cut back the tongue about 4" to clean metal and bolted on a new one).
The way I see it, no matter which brand I use, they all seem to just rust up and get trashed in a few years anyhow. I've had all brands and have not seen one yet that don't rust up and need to be painted. I bought the cheap cad plated one from HF and gave it a shot of spray can galvanizing and some silver paint, that was back in late May. I have a new trailer here, (new last summer, that's not yet seen the water, and that coupler is rusted pretty bad from just sitting in the yard. It's still functional, but well covered in rust. Those from HF and several other $15 or so couplers are all still in decent shape, even a few that I bought about 5 years ago. They all get varied amounts of use.
I have to say that I doubt anyone could tell the difference between a name brand and the el cheapo models. Keep in mind that I'm not towing big heavy trailers, all are pretty light and hauling small boats. I can't say whether or not a cheaper coupler, or drawbar for that matter, would hold up under heavier use or abuse.
