Received via email today:

Dear Customer!

Transaction: Mastercard 7527_c6GB
This letter notifies that on July 26th, 2011 Hotel transaction debiting from your account. Total sum of decommissioning is $1218
This partner hotel was divested accreditation in Moverick Company with reference of noncompliance of the service contract.
Please see the attached form. You need to fill it in and contact your bank for the return of funds.
In the attachment you will find expense sheet with the sum of wrong transaction debiting.
As Company is not responsible for money transactions and acts as intermediary you can seize the court directly to return the funds from the Hotel.
Thank you for understanding. We trust you can solve this unpleasant problem.

Alfonso Froome,
Manager of Reception Desk & Reservation Departament

Came with one of those nasty little .zip attachments titled "Refundform" and although I did not open it I am sure it was an information miner or a virus or worm of some sort. I mean, really, what are they trying to say in the email? I don't have a card ending in those digits, etc. Why would anyone in their right mind click on such a thing?:facepalm:

Aspeck, they are targeting the 97% that are not in their right mind.

Yea, they just figure it's a numbers game and if they throw enough underwear against the wall...
What they try and pull over on us really is unbelievable, when even the most average intelligence would do just what you did. They never even mention a hotel name, so they're just going after people's greed - kind of the same people that wouldn't tell the cashier that they were given back too much change

It's amazing what they will do. About amonth ago I recieved and email that looked very official and from XXXXXXXX@irs.gov containing an attachment that was XXXX.zip.exe. Most people know what .exe files are for and after thinking how in the world would the irs know my email and why in the world would the irs be emailing individuals I start investigating and contact the irs officially and was right about my intuition. Be careful - just because it looks official - you have to be sceptic.

I must be in the largest family in the world. Seems like every couple of days, I have another relative that died and has left me 1.5-million :D and I need to respond to claim my inheritance, and that they have been trying to contact me.

It must work on some or they wouldn't be doing it.

We keep getting phone calls about virus on my commuter. We keep asking how do they know if I even have a commuter. It all started when I donated to a very well know en charity in my Provence and has not stopped for years now.

I always ask those who call, "I Have a virus on my computer? Which one?" I currently have 11 different computers and a couple of servers running!

They ALWAYS tell me all of them!

aspeck - Of course you stayed in a Nigerian hotel 2 days ago. Don't you remember? Just claim what is due, after you cash the cashiers check for twice what is owed and send them the balance. Make sure you " seize the court directly to return the funds from the Hotel." so you don't get bamboozled.

Re: Are People Really this gullible?

I'm out of here! I just received an email from a Nigerian prince that needs help depositing 250 million into a U.S. bank. In exchange, I get to keep 10%!! All I had to do was send them my bank account information so they can make the deposit.

Now I just have to sit back and watch the money roll in...So long suckers...!! :)rolleyes:)

Had an Aunt that temporarily lost almost 70K to a scam artist for magazine "sweepstakes".
It was gladly returned after some persuasion. Scumbags.........

I got this in my inbox this morning:

The embassy has just issued me a temporary passport but I have to pay for a ticket and settle hotel bills. I've made contact with my bank but it would take me days to access funds in my account from Edinburgh. I need you to lend me some funds to cover these expenses. I can give back to you as soon as I get in.

The a**holes hacked my mates account and emailed everyone in his address book!
The clever thing was they configured the reply to go to a very similar address to his!

As you can imagine, I sent them a very nice reply!;)

A certain moderator on here, briefly fell for one of the ones like marcoalza posted above which came to him/her when the email account of another moderator on here was hijacked. It was kinda funny. :D
