Bouncing a jig off the bottom for hours or drowning minnows just doesn't appeal to me, somehow. Casting to northerns and bass does.

I agree...I like to have to find the fish under stumps and in weeds not just hope to hit them on the head with a jig and get a response.

I am a firm believer in the Gulp and Gulp Alive product.

I've caught so much walleyes, crappies, and white bass on this stuff that it's insane.

Last year, me and my dad hit the white bass spawning run...where each cast you'll most likely have a fish on that is IF you know how to fish for them. Me and my dad was pulling fishing just about every cast, while at least 10 boats around us just sat there and watched us.

One Gulp Alive minnow will catch somewhere from 6 - 10 fish before it's so beaten that I have to re-hook a new one. I had no need to buy live bait. My hands where dry and I was able to fish faster - meaning more fish in the boat.

I know when and how to use it for the different species of fish I'm targeting on the lakes/rivers in my area. I absolutly love it and I have no problem dishing out $20 bucks or so on them. I never go out without them.

I truly believe that at times...it does out fish live bait.

Re: Are Gulp Alive baits ... I'm not sure about them

Yesterday I was out to a lake where I have access to a semi-private boat ramp, just to check it out prior to usage. While there I took a fishing rod out and baited it this way: At the bottom a small jig with a Gulp crawfish + a Trout nugget .... 10 inches above another hook with a Gulp leach + a REAL nightcrawler ...

The bass went for the Gulp crawfish + fake food ... I am stunned ...

I keep a couple of jars of the Waxies in my tackle bag. I do this for the reason of always having something that resembles waxies with me at all times. Im kind of a spur of the moment fisherman and tend to decide to go fishing on the fly. 99% of the time Ill wake up on a saturday morning before sunrise or be on the way home from work and decide its time to go. I dont know how many times I have been sitting on the couch and just got up and hooked up the boat. Its not always convinent to stop at Joe's for a bag of minnows or a can of waxies.

also on those days I go out with plans to target Bass or Northerns and the bite is dead its nice to be able to putt over to your honey hole, grab your UL rod and have bait right there.

weather or not it catches more fish I dont know or really care. also the money saved in unused minnows or waxies have already paid for the bait.

I do prefer a live minnow under a chartruce Jig anyday however....... :)

Fish are funny critters, the hubby took me out the other day and we had gulp and real minnows along with the 2,000 other lures and stuff he has(he's a guide and fishes bass tournaments) and the fish hit the gulp 3-1 against the real minnows, now two weeks ago it was the other way around we caught more on the real deal.

So Bassgirl, have you seen the Evinrude commercial that has a guy and a girl fishing and the girl just kept talking. Is there any truth to that? :D Sorry, I couldn't resist. :D

Re: Are Gulp Alive baits ... I'm not sure about them

The entire advertisement campaign for gulp is centered how it is almost as good or just as good as the natural thing.
The logic hidden in this advertisement is that real bait is better or just as good as gulp.
Who could possibly think that man's imitation is better than god's creation?

Did anoter test today at close to home fishing spot. Had a dead Minow (from jar) on a hook and got a bass bite on first cast ... unfortunatly those dead minows are fragile and the bass got away with a free lunch ...

Then imediatly got a Gulp white jerk bait minow on the hook ... same size as dead minow ... and also got a bite on first cast ... but this time the Gulp minow being of stronger material ... I caught the bass ..

Fishing is a mistery ... that's why we stick to it no matter what ... LOL

Cheers

Re: Are Gulp Alive baits ... I'm not sure about them

Presentation is the key. I'm sure that under the right circumstance they are the perfect ticket. I don't know how old many of you are BUT way back when the artificial worms first were coming out the same thing was being said by a lot of guys, "Threw them out and never got a bite". Until they started to experiment and found that the fish that were biting were doing it by impulse. Just slashing out and grabbing the bait. Being tricked into a trigger strike. The same thing with the Gulp. It needs to be used in a way to make the fish bite on impulse. I'm sure a leech on a # 6 or 8 hook behind a bottom walker and trolled around a lake will produce walleyes and other assorted fish. Put on a large minnow and jig and reel and hop and pause and reel again at the proper speed and the gulp will produce muskies and pike. I think once the presentation part is figured out they will be a staple in the tackle box.

I used them last year when the strippers were feeding on the surface. I was fishing with the 4 inch minnow and jig head and couldn't get a hit. Traded the jig head for a number 1 bass hook in-bedded in the minnow and fished on lighter line and just cast out and twitched and darted it over the schools of fish and couldn't keep them off the hook. The gulp looked like one of the bait fish that was crippled and floated to the surface.

I'm learning for all that feedback. Up to a few years ago the only artificial rubber bait I had used was a twin tail grub + a live worm. Today I experimented using your advice with a Gulp jerk bait minow ... creating some erratic movement to it. Got a northern + 3 bass in a very short time period. I guess that is the answer .... and that is probably what needs to be done with any kind of soft bait. Thanks.

I used 3" gulp leaches for the first time last summer on rhe Susquehanna and was impressed with the results, yes a little pricey but they work and are durable.

Gulp swimming mullet, the curly tail grubs...great tail action and a good go-to lure for me. The whole idea like mentioned above is presentation. Why not add a little scent to the equation? Not so sure about the "outfishing" live bait marketing strategy, but Gulp works well and should be an option in the tackle box. Tight lines

I read the other posts last June but never commented.

RE: Gulp. Especially with bass, and maybe walleye, too, presentation will get you the bite... scents and/or Gulp comes into play more for getting fish to suck in a bait aggressively enough that we feel the hit, and getting them to hang on to said bait long enough - or longer- so that we can set the hook.

Fish that spit quick have us setting the hook on water; the second little tap is usually the fish spitting out the lure.

Gulp or anything else with scent can help fishing but they are not a magic tractor beam to game fish.
