A Monterey 224FSC at 22'9" LOA or a Monterey 264FSC at 26'7" either one is a better buy than a Crownie or Chap. My 2 cents.

They are even money IMO Chap is a very nice boat and obviously I am a Crownline guy but I can't beat up Chap at all, go for the best condition boat or options. Quality is very good in both of those boats. As for the question in your title of this thread I would put Crownline quality with any other make out there.

I like the Chaparral line up nice boats. Would not however throw a rock at a crownline either. Both are great boats

Re: Are Crownline decent boats???

I have a Chaparral and absolutely love it!!! My Bud Lipp has a Crownline... another great boat. I also love Cobalts and Sea Rays. I'm a bit of a stickler for attention to detail. All of the above mentioned boats fit the bill in my book. I've gotta say, though,... The Sea Ray, in my eyes, has the sleekest, and best looking hull on any "production" cruiser I've ever seen. Just my .02;). When you're talking about boats on basically the same level, which I feel these are; it's simply a matter of preference... Yours:D.

PS: 24' to 26' boat... I'd be looking for a full cabin with galley and mid-cabin.

Safe and happy boating always!!!

Exactly Chaparral, Crownline and Sea Ray are all very similar boats with similar attributes and like I said they are a toss up, Crownline was created by former Sea Ray engineers so no surprise there, I don't know much of the history of Chaparral but beautiful boats nonetheless, Cobalt I just never liked the lines they were more defined, sort of like the difference between a 67-68 Camaro and the 69, and it just wasn't for me, great boats mind you just not what I am into.

In my opinion, Sea Ray and Crownline are on parity for quality, Chap, Regal and Four Winns are above them, and Cobalt is at the top.

I consider Monterey to be near or even to Crownline and slightly below Sea Ray.

Crownline's are nice boats, but I find them to be more sizzle than steak.

Come on guys lets not get this thread locked, I know lots of people are pi**ed off because their boats are on trailers now but that doesn't help the OP one bit, Everyone has a right to their opinion, some are just more vocal then others so lets just keep this constructive and not another pi**ing match ok?

God I feel like my father!:D

Re: Are Crownline decent boats???

Wayne doesn't like me because he thinks I don't know anything about boats, and I regularly call his BS out on these forums.

You're welcome to listen to me or not listen to me. I have certainly been on enough boats, test driven enough boats, and looked at enough boats to form an opinion that I can type out here.

Wayne has been banned (repeatedly, I might add, including IP Banned) from the Bayliner Owners Club for being belligerent, immature, and lacking any positive contributions to the club. He never posts technical information because he has none. And him saying I know nothing about boats is like the pot calling the kettle black. That's all I am going to say on the subject, but suffice to say anything he shoots HIS mouth off on tends to get locked, quickly. I see his reputation isn't much better over here.

Lets get back on topic and ignore the, uh, special people for a second. I like all the boats mentioned, but I like some more than others. Of all the ones mentioned, I least like Crownline. I have my opinions on why, and can back it up with intelligent and reasonable arguements, but I don't want to threadcrap. PM me if you want to know why.

Sea Ray is a safe choice, and high quality. However, I do feel they (along with CL) are a little overrated, especially when you look at the price. Lots of "supplier" type hardware, etc. Nothing wrong with it, just a little dear in the MSRP....

I think Chaparral earns their reputation and are slightly above Sea Ray. Stuff like gauges and some hardware is bespoke, and they obviously are built to a slightly higher standard than Sea Ray and Crownline.

If you want to own a boat that is first class all the way, I'd go Cobalt. The price difference between a CHap and a Cobalt is not particularly ghastly, and the quality difference is OBVIOUS.

Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re: Are Crownline decent boats???

The question is too vague I think. There is a big difference between the fit, finish and quality of the boats in the sub 20 foot range and the range you are talking about things start to equalize between certain non entry level brands. I can speak of the sub 20 foot for mid 2000's boats but brand new ones are a different animal. The sub 20 footers in the brands you mention were aimed at a different buyer I think and each had some nice attributes. Crownlines are sporty and Chaparrals are luxury. For boats in my range I went through every brand available in my region before shelling out the cash for my Chaparral. The Chaparrals had the heaviest construction and dry weight of every single competitor out there including the last run of sub 20 foot Cobalts and I liked the ride and stability provided. Chaps also really pay attention to the details which is important to me with a boat I plan to keep for a while. All I can say is the Chap fit what I wanted in a boat at the time. I wouldn't have shunned a Crownline but each Crownline I saw as nice as they were had glued in carpet which just didn't belong in such nice boats.

Re: Are Crownline decent boats???

My step father is a dealer principal in the marina business, and sold Crownline at one point (in addition to Grady White, Bayliner, Four Winns, and some others). He NEVER had anything nice to say about Crownline, for the reason mentioned - they tend to have glued in carpets, spec-hardware, lower engine power options in the dealer spec boats, etc.

The smallest Cobalt they make is a very large 20 footer. I test drove this beast with a 350MAG/B3 in it (should tell you how big of a boat it was) and was completely in love. But again, you are looking at about $5,000 more money over a comparable Chaparral.

For me? I'd pass on Crownline entirely. I'd rather save money and get a big engine'd Bayliner and deal with the silly cheapness of some components. Otherwise, I would pay a smidge more and go Regal, Chaparral, or if I could swing it, Cobalt.

I don't have a lot of nice things to say about Sea Ray, but only because their boat's layouts tend to be smaller and more cramped than a similar Bayliner or the lux brands, and again, in light of the price, I just can't justify it. I'd rather get a Regal for about the same price, plus the other brands allow a choice of drive (I prefer Volvo Penta on my boats).

I'd agree with the bigger Sea Rays, but the smaller ones are to me like the elephant in the room at the dealer. The sticker doesn't match the product. The closest dealer to my house where I get my winterizing and work done on my Chap is a Sea Ray dealer (the economy put the Glastron dealer across the street from the SR dealer out of business). Anyway the newest 2010 models are getting there but still not up to the sticker price imo. When I mentioned the 'details' of the Chaparrals, among other things, the hardware, wiring, upholstery and gauges are top notch products. Not just chrome speaker grills and a little bling to cover up the the shortcomings but all around good quality stuff. I will dig a little at the new Chaparrals though. My boat was replaced a couple years back in the Chap line up since my identical boat was made for 7 model years. It was time for a replacement since it was getting stale. Anyway the new replacement to my chap took a step down I think. The new model has a lighter weight for its loa, and only offers up to a 4.3mpi versus the 5.0mpi offered in the previous hull. My point is I saw a definite cheapening of the line. Just for full disclosure I also own a Bayliner.
