Hey!
Got as the title says a Volvo Penta Aquamatic 200d that wont start! Got good spark at the plugs and the carb seems to be working fine as i can see the fuel squirting in. Checked and dubbel checked the gaps and firing order and it all checks out. I had it running a few weeks ago onlything ive done is move it to a new place and now it wont start. Replaced the rotor and cap aswell as the ignition coil and condenser. It sounds like its about to start if u pour fuel straigt down the carbs but then it will backfire and nothing will hapen justs keep turning it over with no sign of life.

Any ideas ? Answers needed! :)

Did you replace the points too? If so, did you set the gap correctly?

Tryed the original firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 according to the manual nothing happened not even a hint of life tryed rotating all cables clockwise to: 2-1-8-4-3-6-5-7 and suddenly it started to rock around and sounds like its close to start but when u let off the starter it dies. Yes swiched the whole distribitur cap + rotor, Got good spark so it shoudnt be that alltho the firing order can still be off. With the second firing order the rotor stands againts cylinder nr1 when the line on the crank is inline with the alignment plate. Soo conclusion got it to huff and puff but nothing more atm :/

Any more ideas ? :)

Sounds like you put the wires on the distributor like the manual shows, but the distributor may have been put in one or two teeth off. Your moving the plug wires compensated for that. Now that you have it running, you need to turn the distributor and set it with a timing light.

Don,
From what I read, it sounds like he doesn't have it running quite yet.

Alex,

Try loosening up the distributor hold down just enough so you can twist the distributor, but it still has some resistance. Get someone to help crank the engine if you do not have a remote starter button, and slowly twist the distributor while the engine is trying to be started (start by twisting the distributor in the direction you moved the wires in). If you get it running, let it warm up for a couple of minutes till the choke opens up and allows it to idle, then set your ignition timing. If you find that the distributor has to be rotated a large amount that either the primary or secondary ignition wires are stretched out, or prevent the distributor from being set to proper ignition timing, you will need to start from square 1, and find out which post on the distributor cap best works for cylinder 1 set at compression TDC.

BTW, you have the muffs hooked up and garden hose on when your trying to start the engine, right? ;)

Uhm no garden hose as the engine has its own non saltwater cooling system :) Havent got it running on its own yet and have tryed losening the distrib cap and setting it right but cant get it to run just to huff and puff... Put new pluggs in with 0,7 gap as instructed in manual. Tryed pouring fresh petrol down the carb but no luck just huff and puff. The engines says AQ200D and as far as i can tell its a Chevy small block 305 with chrystler ignition if that info can help anyone.

You have closed loop cooling for the engine, but the heat exchanger still requires raw water drawn through the drive in order to accomplish this. It uses a impeller style pump usually mounted on the crank shaft or driven by a belt, and if this impeller pump is spun for any length of time with out water, the rubber impeller burns up in no time. Chances are you probably have started to damage the impeller or even ruined it by trying to crank it allot with no water supplied too it... :(

You say you have a GM 5.0L with a Chrysler ignition? You need to post some pictures of what were working on here, because that doesn't sound right...
