Aq131 volvo penta wont idel or start when hot

Hi there prity much its just as the title sayed i just got this boat last week last owner said he had it out last year but from the looks off it it could have been a lot longer . Anyway i got it home and tryed to start it after a lot off mucking about i got it going engine sonds sweet but anything below 2500 rpm and it cuts out if you run it till its up to temp u cant get it started again till it cools today i put new plugs in it and it did help alot i can now get it down to about 1600 rpm beore it cuts out but still wont start when hot any help would be very appreciated thanks

How long since the last full tuneup. Including a compression test, setting the dwell, setting the timing?
Do you have a water separating fuel filter? Is so, have you checked it for water. If not, you could have water in the carb, along with corrosion, and dirt and the idle circuits are plugged up.

Not done compresion test just took it it was ok since runs so good when its going geting dwell and timing done monday iv had the carb off and cleaned all looks ok

Worn out engines may run fine and sound smooth but be down on power and hard to start. They can also sound fine but be so far out of adjustment in dwell and timing they have no power at all and again hard to start.
How does it do in the water? What's your max rpm? Does it get on plane easily?

What model 131 do you have? There A through D models. What drive? May also tell you what year boat you have.

Iv never had it in the water hopfuly the prob is not low compresion !!! As in what 131 iv got im realy not sure iv was thinking it was an a but thats just cos iv been looking at them on youtube and thats what it looks like its a sp leg and its white if it helps

the fuel has been in the tank for a few years iv herd people talking about fuel going off but to be honest iv had loads off boats and cars that have had old fuel and never had a prob . is it poss that that could be my prob ?

Yes, it could be your problem. If this were my boat, I would do what don has mentioned already. A compression test, would be my first step. It can tell you a lot. Let us know what your number are. Followed by a full tune up and new gas. For testing purposes you could hook it up to an external fuel tank with new gas. However, if the boat has been sitting, the carb could very well be dirty and in need of a rebuild.

just to ad iv just been out at the boat and yet again started first turn no probs ran it for about 20 mins at about 2500 rpm it ended up staling as i was trying to get the rpm down but again wont start when hot i did notice when it was runing that there is a kind off whitish kind off substence forming or the buterfly in the carb looks like frost !!!

I don't know what the white stuff is, but running the boat at 2500 rpm for 20 min isn't telling you anything. I wouldn't run it any faster without being under load, it's not good for the motor. Try to work through it methodically...

well if does need a tune up thats for sure im prity sure that will sort out the high rpm im just not sure about this not starting when hot i just cant see how that can have anything to do with a tune up

So what isn't right when it won't start??? Is there fuel, spark, what is missing? Chasing issues on a motor of unknown condition sounds like a frustating job. That is why I would go back to the compression test, etc.

when its hot and wont start iv pulled the plugs and there as dry as a bone even after 30 secs of turning the starter but there does seem to be plenty off fuel going in to the carb . we do have a spark im going to do a compresion test first thing tomorow

A safely administered shot of fuel down the carb before attempting to start should tell you if its getting fuel or not. If it fires right up...

well i done a compeaion test and all seems Gd 150 to 160 all 4 cylinders changed and set points changed rotor arm done timing changed ignition distributor and and still just the same so i then tryed runing on a small can off fresh fuel and its now runing perfect !!!!!!!! so dicided that the fuel had went bad but then tryed runing on the old fuel again but without the inline filter and still perfect . so im puting the prob down to inline fuel filter its did look prity bad

Glad to hear your making headway. I would suggest a water seperating fuel filter. The new ethenol added fuels don't last long.

Now that you've got the engine running and we know the compression is good, I would suggest checking over the outdrive before floating the boat. Pulling the upper gear box is part of the routine mainenance. While its off you can change the ujoint bellows and check the ujoints and flywheel bearings for play, etc.
