AQ125A Sea Water pump problem

Hello everybody.

I have a Bayliner Capri Cuddy with a Volvo Penta AQ125A .

Problem is, I changed the Impeller cause I found a piece of it in the Basket of the Sea Watter filter. now the Pump is not bringing water up and my engine overheated a bit last Sunday on the lake.

I know one of the Seal Rings from the Tubes coming from the lake is no in proper conditions, and I already order the replacement.

I took the pump apart again and everything seams to be in good conditions, and only thing is when I close the Pump is really hard to make it rotate, witch I believe is ok since it has to make some suction.

Any ideas ? Any help?

Thank you for everything.

If the tubes coming from the drive TO the pump have a leak and suck air, the pump will not pull water to the pump and you will probably destroy your new impeller.
Get the tubes air tight before you run it.

Re: AQ125A Sea Water pump problem

New info

Well I did replace the Seals on the Hose's coming in and out of the Pump but still nothing.
and I know it worked before I changed the Impeller.

Questions:

1 - Is all right for the pump to be very very tight to rotate it after rebuild it?
2 - How the pump gets the rotation movement, I know from Inside the engine, but is there a possibility that that is not rotating?
3 - How can I test the hoses to be air tight?
4 - Once you start the engine, water should come out from the exhaust pipe on the Drive right? right away with the engine idle?

I did set the OutDrive in a big bucket full of water to be sure it was with all into the water, the Exhaust is right outside water level

Take the cover off the raw water pump and crank the engine and see if the impeller is turning. If not, you may have a failed engine to pump coupler called a cross piece.

Re: AQ125A Sea Water pump problem

Are you sure you got all the pieces of that old impeller out of the system? Look at the old one and be sure- even a small piece lodged someplace in that water routing piping will screw things up.

This may help with ques. 3.

Here is how I tested all the connections on the water inlet side on mine:
(with the engine off of course)
I hooked up a vacuum (shop vac) to the water inlet copper pipe at the RWpump and taped shut the water intakes on the drive. I put shaving cream on all the junctions I could find both inside the engine compartment and outside on the drive on that input water line. I heard a distinct air sucking sound from the water inlet connection on the outdrive and saw where the foam had sucked into the connection= the leak or leaks.

Now I bought all the seals/gaskets/o-rings to replace on the outdrive side of the system that affects water intake.
The S-shaped water intake hose was replaced since the end connected to the metal water intake junctions looks deformed and the clamp seemed to be cutting into it on the edge.
I replaced the s-shaped water intake hose, cleaned up the aluminum water fitting and replaced the special gasket-o-ring under the fitting. The old special gasket was so brittle it almost deteriorated in my hands, so that was the original source of the air leaking. The tricky part was doing all this without taking the upper part of the drive off, but I got 'er done. You need to be patient, find tools that can fit in there or devise something and be patient.

Its pumping water real strong and not overheating. I rebuilt the RW pump all new parts inside and seals and all first before doing the repair I described above and it still overheated so thats what pointed me in the direction of finding the air leak in the RW system.

If there is air sucking into the RW inlet side of the system it will overheat.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, the foam part is pretty ingenious, I'll try that.
and yeah I know I had all the pieces cause it was only one piece and the impeller was missing just the same part.

Thx Don, I've been in the post too and messaging the guy.
I got the Schematics for marinepartsexpress.com

Although I can't find the drawing for the hose that goes outside the boat to the lower Driver. I guess I have to check that better.
