Anyone with a "big" motor on their Starcraft?

I'm thinking about re-powering. Anyone have a motor on their aluminum Starcraft that's close to (or over) the max HP rating?

My plaque says 150hp, but that was when engines were rated at the crank. Newer engines are rated at the prop. I'm thinking a newer 150 would be too much for the boat.

I always use the biggest legal motor I can. In your case I would put a 150 on it. It wont weigh anymore than an older motor(prob less) so the transom can support the weight. the differences at prop vs crank are not that much ~10hp...

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS I have a 1977- 200hp on my 22ft Holiday. It is very fast . Wide open with a stainless prop it will get light in the Bow end. It was on the boat when I bought it . It is the same block as the older 150 just set up differently. I would be happy with a 150 newer type as it is rated at the prop. This is more then the old way they rated motors. You do not have to run it wide open, and haveing the horses in a emergency for a quick run can be comforting.

I have an Islander 221B with the Merc 200 Opti and an 8hp Yamaha kicker. only issue with the 200 Opti is I can't tilt the motor all the way up as the cowling hits the transom, but I get it up far enough to keep the motor out of the water in warm weather. I keep my boat in a marina all year long.

Care to comment on it's performance, please?

no the 470 has been very good to me
I do hear a lot of trash talk
but I`ve had no issues
I have not heard of any others with the 470
in a starcraft not in this forum (any body)
she`s light and sips the fuel

My 22 1975 Holiday will go over 50 with the Stainless prop and nearly that with the aluminum prop size is 14 1/4-21 for both props. Oh the motor is a 1977 Johnson Outboard 200 hp. However at that speed as light as the hulls are it takes a beating in rough seas but has never leaked. ( YET )

I've got a monster 25hp on my Seafarer 14 DLX. My rating plate says the max is 30hp. WOT pushes her at a blazing 21 mph, blinding speed, the wind tearing at your flesh.
Seriously, I'd love to drop a 40HP on it but I'm afraid I'd tear the transom right off. A 30hp longshaft Merc has been downright impossible to find locally. If I hit the lottery, maybe I'll buy a new Etec for it.

I have had it for three years in the Ocean and a lot orf River running. We get a lot of salmon runs inland as we are only 3 miles from the Pacific. The previous had it for 10 years and the 200 was on it. It has been Coast guard checked and approved with the big engine. ????? It handels well except I would prefer a hudraulic set up but funds are hard to come by being retired for 14 years. I am 72 and spend a lot of time on the water. iI HAVE NEVER FELT THE FLOOR OR TRANSON BEING COMPRIMISED AND NEVER HAVE TO TURN ON THE BIELGE PUMP OR GET WATER WITH THE PLUG OUT. EXCELLENT BOAT AND IT GETS ACCIDENTLY ABUSED OFTEN. ED
