Anyone ski with a 3.OL?

Lots of boats (bowriders, 18-19') for sale in my area that have 3.0L i/o engines. I'd like to know your experiences with them.

I have no need for speed (30mph is plenty) but I'll have 5 teenagers in the boat with me, with one who's destined to be 180lbs. If he gets to where he can slalom ski, will I be able to pull him up without drowning him first? ;)

Or should I spend the extra grand or two for a v6?

Yup, all the time. I'm 6ft and around 180lbs - you don't pop up as fast as you do behind a malibu but my 19ft with 3.0L works just fine. I'm not saying not to spend the extra $$$ on a v6, more power is better but a 3.0L will work fine.

More power is always better but if you can learn to slalom behind a 3.0 you can learn ski behind anything.
One thing that made a lot of diff for me when I had a 2.3 Liter was just getting the right Prop. Like you say, you need torque, not speed.

Re: Anyone ski with a 3.OL?

My old boat was a 1984 Sportcraft 18.5" with a 3.0L 4cyl GM. We never were able to slalom and did not have a wakeboard, but we skied (spelling?) all the time and tubed. We never had any problems at all (I am 6'5" 225lbs) except if we had a few extra riders. It was pretty tough then. I money is the issue then by all means get the 3.0L because you CAN ski just fine with it. If possible though, find a 4.3L or more. You will probably be happy you did.

My concern here is you saying that you would have 5 teen age kids with you and trying to ski, the boat would have a tough enough time just getting on plane with 6 people on board let alone trying to pull up a skier, go for the V6 if not a V8 or you will be very disappointed.

Tough time getting on plane with 6 people in the boat? Seriously? You ever been in a 3.0L powered runabout? Standard ski day I've got 4-6 in the boat and 1 behind the boat - all I ski is slalom, some of the kids wakeboard and some ski. I will say that we are all pretty tall and skinny, it would be different if we had a boatload of 200lbrs.

Re: Anyone ski with a 3.OL?

Reading into this, alot of guys start out with the 3.0L as their first boat. I'd say, based on what I've read here, prolly 50% opt out of those boats within a year or two of owning it. They dont call that motor the "Iron Duke" for nothing. That little guy will run and run and run and run with little or no problems for YEARS! With that being said, there are a number of itmes to look at when buying a boat with this motor. The number on thing to remember is weight. Alot of boats have no been well maintained and people get in the boats sopping wet and allow the floor to get sopping wet and with older boats, the floors were not epoxied or gel coated and that water would eventually transmit through the floor and soak the floatation foam underneath. When that foam gets soaked, it can add a TON of weight to the boat. If this is the case, it could possibly take you a minute to drag the tail of the boat on plane with that little motor. Add a few "healthy" teenagers to the mix and you have a recipe for a rough time getting out of the water when skiing.
The other thing, my reason for selling my 3.0L and moving to the 4.3L was noise! That little motor made ALOT of noise is my 82 Sea Ray. You must consider the construction of the dog house around the motor, look for good sound proofing and DO NOT buy the boat without taking it out on the water and putting it under load a few times and listen carefully and determine for yourself whether you can put up with the noise this little monster throws out in THAT PARTICULAR BOAT. Do not assume that because one boat is loud, the next one will be as well.
One of the BEST things about this little motor is the gas mileage. I could ski and board behind my 3.0 all weekend and not put any gas into it. My 4.3L, I average two tanks a weekend. With gas prices now, this should be a HUGE consideration!
One thing that helped me with my 3.0L was the addition to automatic trim tabs on the transom. It helped my plane out alot quicker and stay on plane at low speeds. U may want to consider this when looking for a boat as well. Good luck man!

Hey where are you skiing in Columbus and are you getting any good water? I see that ski lake just north of Polaris every time I drive by and wonder who has that. We used to have the one between 95 and 61 on 71, if you saw it when we had the jump on it--that's where I barefooted the first time (successfully, that is)

Are you talking about the lake that is just south of 36 behind the Mc Donalds that you can see from 71? If so, I believe that the owners of the Mc Donalds owns that. If not, are you talking about Alum? Alum is horrid for skiing! Unless u hit it early or late enough. then u have a 50/50 shot of good water. We normally hit Deer Creek, early in the morning. You can find some real good open water there if you get in before the rush. Otherwise, gotta head south my friend. Norris is my favorite.
Is the lake u used to have out by Fredericktown??

I was going to buy a 3.0L runabout until riding in one. 3 big guys on the boat and one skiing was very dissapoint. You can get up but lots of dragging. For smaller people or kids it might be okay though.

Bought my boat new in 1983 and have skied plenty behind it. Many weekends with 4 grown guys. It will pull up 2 on slalom _IF_ the skiers are good experienced skiers. I have never regretted the 3.0L in my boat and I havea friend with a 5.0L in a 18' Fourwinns and my 3.0 pulls up a slalom skier easier. The power plant is not all that you should look at.

My parents own a 3.0L Mercruiser in a Bayliner 17.5 ft. Every time we go out on the boat we have 5 adults (150-220 lbs) and my brother wakeboards like a champ! No problem planing and no problem pulling. As a matter of fact, we've blown past v6 boats with more hps :D

We slalom behind a 3.0 - no problem! (17ft)

Six people in the boat and it takes a little while to get up, but it gets up!

I've been skiing behind 3.0 liter mercruisers since I was 12. I'm 6'3" and 225 and i have no problem regardless of who's on board. I like to slalom at 33-35 mph and have no problem doing so.

I have an '87 Four winns w/ a 3.0 and am wondering what pitch props u guys are using for skiing/wakeboarding? My prop is in ok shape (unknown pitch) but I can always use a spare especially if it will help with the hole shot!

Re: Anyone ski with a 3.OL?

You guys may be able to ski but depending on how seriously you slalom, you are wasting a great deal of energy to pull your self out of the water which results in quicker fatigue while skiing. I ski behind a v6 and I can tell a huge difference just between 21 and 19 props. If I am too lazy to put on my 19 prop I definitely notice it is more of a struggle getting out of the water, the 19 just pulls me right out. Can't imagine getting dragged through the water behind a 3.0. I would definitely look for a 4.3, even if the 3.0 works, the motor is taking more of a beating and probably burning more gas to do the job.

Re: Anyone ski with a 3.OL?

Prop is everything.

My buddy had a 19 footer with a 5.0L V8. I had a 3.0L 18.5 footer. Between those two the 3.0 was SOOOO much easier to get up behind on a slalom, only because it was propped correctly!! And it was lighter, giving it a smaller wake.

We used that old 3.0L Rinker I/O for running the course for nearly a decade before one of the group finally "upgraded" to a nice Tige. I'm 200 lbs. Never had a problem....that 3.0 popped me up in about 2 or 3 seconds every time, even if 5 people were on board. The Tige can't get me up any faster because I can't hold onto the dang rope if it tries to pull me any faster than 1/2 throttle on take-off! With the 3.0 any monkey behind the wheel could just slam the throttle to WOT and ignore the speed and just concentrate on steering....it capped at about 32 to 33 which was PERFECT for the course...was almost as steady as Perfectpass!

YOu just gotta prop them so they spin about 4,800 to 4,900 at top speed. If they're propped to spin 4,200 or 4,400 they'll drag you forever...

??? Mine is proped correctly and there is no problem getting out of the water or dragging forever. Sometimes the problem is a big guy on a ski that wasn't made to take the weight. I run about 180 and I can tell you that using my father in laws skis that are for a guy around 145 is an experience in pain. Using my ski(s), which are sized for me is a whole different experience.

Yep we used to use a Bayliner 175 with a 3.0 and it pulled really well, once we put a 4 blade prop and Smart Tabs on it.
