2001 dt140 efi with ECU computer controller. No spark any cly. Everything tests fine so far (switches, shutoffs, fuses , coils ,wire etc). I'm down to the ECU. Seloc manual has no info that helps. Does anyone know how to test the ECU (engine control unit)? Want to test mine before replacing and can't find any info. I have also found a used one to replace with and want to make sure it's good before I buy. New one goes for $2000.00 used $800.00 Anyone have any ideas

Only way to test that I have heard of is on the motor.
Test all inputs and out puts to make sure all voltages are in spec. using the proper equipment, like the manual says

Automotive Scientific in Rogersville, TN (423-921-9085) is an electronic module rebuilder/analyzer, and can rebuild just about anything electronic. And, their level of service is excellent. See if they can help you.

My Jaguar has 17 electronic modules--many of which cost $1,500 new. There's no way anyone can afford OEM parts at such ridiculous prices, and outfits like this have a very good future. I know where every salvage Jaguar within 250 miles is located--for future parts.

Every automobile built after 2007 has CAN/BUS systems--computer wires communicating between modules. Modern outboard motors are also using automotive technology, and have electronic modules all over them. Many new outboards also have fly by wire throttles and shifting, and have multi use gauges that are also very expensive. The day of the shade tree boat mechanic is officially over.

And, $800 for a used ECU is a ridiculous price, too.

You know, sometimes you've just got to go to a dealership when a service problem stumps you. See what they'd charge you for a diagnosis--not to fix it without your specific approval.

Good luck!

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

wow the ECU for my 03 F115 is only about $1K...and I thought that was ridiculously high..I will never ever buy a suzuki motor now that I kn ow the cost of the ECU. no way to really test an ECU that I am aware of other than checking output voltages. as far as I am concerned they can take every over price EFI outboard and sink them off the coast to make an artificial reef, and humanity would be better served. Carbs rules and EFI drools..

Trying to test according to manual, but select manual has no info on how to test it. Hence my question. And I can't find a factory manual. Thanks for the input.

looks like they do not list a manual for a DT140 for 2001, are you sure that is the year?
How about posting all the numbers off of your motor.
have you contacted them to see what they say about a manual for your motor?
or maybe ask them about procedure and equipment needed?

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

your ecu sends voltage out to all of your sensors, coils, injectors..all these voltages can be checked and compared to the information provided in a factory manual..not sure why you cannot find a manual..that really suxes. I thought Yamahas suxed..looks like suziks sux worser... LOL

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

Yup you are right. I was going off of the paperwork. Motor says it is a 1999. Found the factory manual at brownspoint for $70.00 shipped. Think I'll just take to dealer and get a diagnosis for $85.00.. To confuse things the ECU part number that is installed is for 2000-2001. So I figure it was made late 1999 and has some 2000 parts on it

Yea I checked those most are just manual supplements 11-50 pages and the one full manual doesn't cover efi. Thanks

Post the #s off of your motor, serial will tell what year it is.
Hopefully the serial matches you paper work, kind of sounds like the papers are not correct and that would worry me.
year of manufacture does not mean that is the year model

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

Serial number is 14003 031051 on aluminum plate on left side of motor, which doesn't translate to anything in my manual except possibly 2000-2001 those years have no special designation. Sticker in right side of motor has ACN 001 828 164 and has a date of 1999 in bottom corner. No blinking codes, no tach but factory guage says oil tank 1/2 full (two green lights) and normal beep on key turn no other warnings. Oil level sender tests fine, ignition switch test ok, kill switch test ok, oil flow ok, all fuses ok, no spark to any clynders, fuel pump tunes on with key turn, ran fine two weeks ago parked it tried to start it 1 week ago and dead battery, charged battery then no start no spark changed plugs still no speak anywhere.

200014003-03001DT 140TCLY
DT 140TCXY

the 14003 in serial # represents 140 hp
The 03001 is the starting serial# of the year 2000

If you pay attention you will notice the first 0 in the second part of the serial # represents the year 2000

You need to make sure you have the proper voltage inputs into the the ECU, if they are not in spec then you are not going to get the right stuff out.
That $70 manual will help you trouble shoot and repair the motor from now on and that $85 diagnosis fee is just for that one time

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

Thanks for clarification on year, going to order manual. I just got title, boat reg, and trailer reg through the DMV today so all paperwork is complete and legal so time to get this puppy fixed, fishing reports are heating up and dying to get the new rig offshore.

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

If you dont have a good battery the motor wont have spark even if you jump start it. And if that doesnt work the pulser coil under the flywheel is most likely to give you a problem. P>S check your kill lanyard

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

Thanks for the info good to know about the battery, I have been way too busy with work and tiling bathroom floor for the wife so haven't had much time to test voltages. I am going to get new battery, was on list of things to do anyway. And then test voltages at ECU and pulser coil. Ignition switch, kill switch, neutral switch, low oil sender, temp sender all test normal Will keep you all updated on progress.

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

The pulser coil/ignition timing coil is reading .31 ohms spec reading is 240-360 so it's time for new coil at least, and waiting for new battery to be delivered. Will continue with the saga as I get parts.

Re: Anyone know how to test Suzuki ECU??

Ok here is latest update. Bought a new auto ranging meter and re tested all. Pulser coil tested in spec. (had a bad meter) battery charge coil in specs, cly temp sensor in spec, injector coil in spec, gear count coil in spec, condenser charge coil high output in spec, but condenser charge coil low output should be 356-534 ohms and it is reading out of limit on my meter I'm thinking the coil is toast, but need to replace whole stator as all coils and stator are one piece. Going to test what voltages I can(too dark tonight) and try to verify my findings. Until next update Happy Boating. Bruce.
