Hi, I have seen many ads (Craigslist, etc...) for Vermont boat registrations for other states residents.
Anyone knows what this is?
Is it a scam?

Thanks.

Have no idea if it's a scam, but I would suspect it's a scam.

Regardless: if I wanted to register a boat in Vermont, Craigslist is probably not in the top five places I would start looking for information on registering a boat in Vermont. - I suggest you call the state of Vermont.

Vermont is somewhat liberal w registrations for boats, motorcycles too, just have to submit required info as an out of state owner/buyer

that said, an unscrupulous person might falsely claim compliance w whatever Vermont requires, knowing they falsified requested/required info, so there's that to consider too

Wisconsin is too, but limits boats to under 18ft, over 18ft requires an in-person inspection by a Wisconsin LEO.

In the classic/ muscle car world, Vermont is OFTEN mentioned. Evidently they are lax on registration / title requirements, and there are even guys in VT who "do this" "for a phee." Evidently VT DMV does not need to see/ inspect a VIN to issue a title.

"I bet" that is what you are seeing.

If you want to see how absolutely frustrating loose titles can be, look up 'Yellow Bullet' and "Stolen Cuda." It is a sad sad deal, and the guys responsible never were charged

never heard that before
i have registered and titled 4 boats over 18' in wisconsin, between 2010 and 2020.
none had ever been titled before
1 had only old expired registration from another state.
1 had bill of sale and expired wi registration
the other 2 had bill of sale and current registration in wi

none of these were inspected, just paid the fees and sales tax, and received title and registration.

As an in state resident?

I tried an 18ftr Starcracft that was actually 18ft 6in via online as an out of state resident and got a needs inspection notice.

No idea why I did and you didnt have trouble other then in vs out of state and I had no documentation from seller, and you had docs for all 4, perhaps old & incomplete but something.

Including the 2 well documented boats is meaningless & irrelevant.
