Anyone ever use NAPA Aviation gasket/sealant on their vintage gearcase/oil seals?

Hi all. After recently completing a lower unit reseal job on my '66 20 hp, I did some tank testing and got ye olde milkshake oil :/ , soooo I clearly need to do it again. I know that lots of folks use 3M 847 for the gasket material, but I can't find it in town anywhere and I'd rather not have to have it shipped, if at all possible. After doing some digging here in the forums I came across and old thread where someone used NAPA Aviation gasket/sealant with good success. Just curious if anyone else had any experience with it. I can get it locally and a 4 oz. container with brush top is only about $5 vs. $17 for a tube of 3M 847. Thanks.

I use the black permatex..works great for me on the newer gear cases. it is oil and water resistant.

Hi Sparkie. I was looking at Permatex too. I used a version on the last job and it didn't seem to get along with the oil very well. Which "version" of Permatex do you use? Is it the more oil resistant headgasket sealant, I think they call it "Ultra Black",or something else. Got a pic perhaps? I've also heard of folks using Permatex 1000, but couldn't find that anywhere either. Thanks again.

yes it is, Permatex 82180 Ultra Black. the Permatex Black Silicone Adhesive Sealant
Part No. 81158 will also work fine, I have used both with great success, I also use it for sealing the head water ports on the 60 degree motors, and pretty much anywhere I have a old or worn seal that I cannot replace

I really wouldnt reccomend anything other than the 3M product for resealing. There is a reason it is so highly reccomended.

It is expensive, but worth it when you dont need to open up gearcases 2 or 3 times right?

Just my 2 cents.

Im sure you should be able to get it near you, maybe some of the Florida readers can help with locations.

BTW, do you know where she is leaking? I find a faulty spot on new gearcase re seals is from the spaghetti seal either being cut too short and not butting up to the prop seal housing OR too long, bending/twisting the seal causing a fault. 1/16 overhang is about ideal, and cut square.

I'm not exactly sure where it's leaking from now :/ I noticed the leak last time and found that the drive shaft seal was unseated so I ordered a new seal kit and put it all back together using a different permatex variety. I did some tank testing and checked the oil and it was milky. I really took my time putting the LU back together carefully and it's not leaking from where it was before, but it's obviously still leaking from somewhere. I'm curious to see what DC20 finds using the aviation sealant. I wish I knew the compound in 847 that makes it so special so I could look for it locally. Oh well, if I can't figure something out soon I'll break down and order some.

P.S.
Does anyone have any pics of how they pressure test their LU after a reseal job?
