Anyone ever try electric socks?

Ok, the doctor(s) has given me orders to get out and "power walk" and get myself up to two miles a day times four days a week. My "issue" is (really) poor circulation in the lower extremities which means my feet get cold easily. In the summer I don't see it being an issue but with winter on the way.... The closest mall or indoor area is an hour and a half by car so that's a no go and I have to find a different solution.

I don't see wearing my heavy boots (insulated) to do it and I'm wondering if the heated (electric) socks I see advertised would make a difference. Curious if anyone else has ever given them a try?

They work, used for hunting, they did use batteries up quick but I used cheep ones. As far as washing had to be done by hand, and line dried.

Two miles requires quite a few extension cords...

I tried em for motorcycle riding and didn't notice the difference. Wool socks and hiking style boots are comfy and warm for long walks.
Maybe something like this:

Bubba, Smartwool makes all sorts of socks for all sorts of applications, especially that one. I'd suggest going that route along with some lighter but sturdy boots. I think you'll be much happier than you would with battery socks.

I tried them for hunting and could never feel the difference. Total waste of money. I switched to insulated socks and they wwork fine. can't remember where i got them though.

Re: Anyone ever try electric socks?

bubba I tried elec socks, i didn't like them. toes got too warm and the rest of the foot didn't notice. been many years since then.

I would recommend a nice merino wool sock 70% wool at least and a comfortable hiking boot. just got my girlfriend to try this combo and she is very happy.
the socks don't have to be bulky to be warm. the wool wicks away moisture while insulating. I use them every year for hunting up here in very cold temps.

Bubba I would go with a pair of light hiking boots/runners with a good sole and thinsolite liner.
put in a good pair of insoles to help wick away the perspiration.
As for socks, jock (white stretchy) then a wool type over those.

You can use a hot pepper style cream, example tiger balm to help with the circulation (test in a small area of your foot first before a general application)

X2 That's what I use "sitting" in the deer stand to keep the footsies warm. Walking around you should stay plenty warm...

Electric socks was a waste of money....

In this same vein, the best invention on the planet is the electric blanket. Well maybe in the top 100. We've got them on all beds in the main home and lake home beds. We've got a couple electric throws as well. Great for generally cold people like me.

Re: Anyone ever try electric socks?

Will do but,,, well insulation assumes there is heat to be insulated against and in my case that is the issue, poor blood flow = very little heat to begin with. The biggest issue is I can't really "feel" when they get cold. Actually I have that backwards, they "feel" cold all the time, even when sitting in warm water.

Hear ya. Cold feet are no fun my friend. Those little foot warmer packs are pretty effective too. Might give them a shot. If they don't work you're only out a buck or so.

I would also point out that if you're walking you will generate heat even in your extremities. your bloodflow should increase enough to keep your feet warm while moving.

Bubba, I would strongly recommend Alpaca Wool socks. They are warm, machine washable, line dry, they do not hold sweat or smell, they are not itchy, just an awesome wool sock. I love mine! My feet don't get cold very often, and people laugh at me cause I am walking around in dress shoes or sneakers when others have insulated boots and heavy wool socks on. Get yourself a few pairs of them ... you will love them! Here is an example ... Alpaca Direct: Dahlgren Alpaca Alaskan Winter Boot Socks

^+a bunch...... wool socks, and/or the little foot warmers will do the trick.
The toe warmers last about 4 hours, should be enough for a power walk. When snowmobiling/working outside I'll change them out at lunch time.
A good pair of ankle insulted hiking boots are very comfortable for walking, Checkout Merrell.

Good luck Bubba

I had electric socks a long time ago. Contained a couple of batteries. I would have probably kept on wearing them if the batteries had been rechargeable

Bubba, my dad went through a similar situation w/ circulation. He did his power walking on a treadmill at home. Not as scenic, but the tv helped. Good luck !!!

Sorry about that. Didn't catch what the Doc. said on the other thread. Although I really don't think the heart & other muscles would know the difference. Best to stick w/ his recommendations. :sorry:

Re: Anyone ever try electric socks?

My dad had bad circulation along with leg pain. He ended up getting a couple of stents. One in each leg right where the arteries? come together at the upper part of each leg....... No biggy and may not be your problem........
