Has anybody used that grey rubber backed carpet from Lowes in a boat. If not what is the most economical place to buy boat carpet. Thanks

Re: Anybody used lowes rubber backed grey carpet?

I purchased outdoor carpet from Lowes for the boat buy not the stuff with rubber backing. I'm sure there will be opinions both ways but my thought was that since it's inevitable that the carpet will get wet, a more open weave on the back to allow evaporation was the way to go.

I looked at the local big box stores and carpet stores as well as online suppliers. Lowes prices were in line with others although I did have to order the carpet. If I remember correctly, it was a standard size but that size worked out just fine for my 18' runabout.

I'm not a carpet fan but,......... ask for a sample pice and bring it home........ put it in your sink and see how it reacts to water. See if the "rubber" backing absorbs water. If it does do not use that carpet.

Rubber backed carpet will soak up and hold water. Don't use it. Use an outside Decking carpet. It has a smooth finish almost like it's glued. Lowe's should have it and I know Home Depot does because I did my boat four years ago with carpet from Home Depot and it has worked great. I like your choice of Grey. I used dark Blue and it shows everything. It wasn't a good choice of color for me but Oh well. I could have done a lot worse.

Re: Anybody used lowes rubber backed grey carpet?

My son actually works at a lowes, And he and I are doing a 12 foot Sears gamefisher restore. We went in there and was checking out the outdoor carpet the green that they use on like a golfing range tee area. We ordered black as the boat is going too be red. When it came and we got it home we noticed it looked thin and took it back they said it was a defect and sent it back. When the other came in it was the same. Weave was thin and you could see the backing all too well. We decided then for 20 bucks more too go with the Black Marine carpet like they have on pontoon boats. It is nice/Short and woven tight.
When it came in we realized they sent Grey. During the waiting we were talking and decided black would be too hot and really wanted something different anyways so was happy too see the order came grey. It will be awhile before we are at the point of putting the carpet in. But we unrolled it and its much nicer. Glad we went with the marine grade.
Oh and if you can get a friend at lowes, they can order special orders at just above cost. Great discount.

I used it and didn't mind it. Have had it in there for about 4 or 5 years and when I started my open bow project had to remove some of it. Didn't notice any negative side effects to it being in there but the wettest the carpet ever got was when my buddy knocked over an opened pop bottle. The new construction is going to get painted and textured, the main deck area will stay carpet. Fish hooks get caught too easy on the carpet.

I used it on my bunks. Seems to really hold the water.

The glue that is used with the installation makes the difference. rubber backing, if glued correctly it will add additional layer for water protection getting to the wood. Water does not go through rubber, but will go through the small cracks in the rubber backing. Glue can seal the cracks if they are any. Without the rubber you have less protection, but still can have with the type of glue you used. I am restoring a 1978 Glastron. Here is what the floor looks like. Iam thinking whether to replace the ply because it looks great. I had to sand away the rubber backing of the carpet that was on it. Check out the before and the after

Bottom line I will use marine ply, then glass coat then a good marine glue for my rubber backed marine carpet. Brings a greater piece of mind at a little more (just a little) extra cost, considering the time you will have your boat. The glue is what maintains the life of marine ply over the other plys. Maintain good care and good storage.
