Hook it to a 12V battery, (+) to IGN, (-) to GND, if the needle doesn't go to zero, it's broke. Course, even if it does go to zero you still don't know if it works.

I dunno jt. The replacement tach in my boat sits on ?? 600 rpm with the key off. Apparently there are analog tachs and ???? digital tachs. I am told that analog tachs are yesterday's news and no manufacturers support them anymore. Not sure when the change was made.
