Re: Any "sailors" out there?

I have been sailing about 5 years. I sailed on a friend's 18 footer with a cuddy 15 years ago, but otherwise strictly daysailers. Wouldn't mind going out on a trailersailer, just no recent opportunities. I belong to a sailing club that gives access to a nice variety of daysailers and racers. I have also owned a couple of boats - my current is a Hunter 170, which I really enjoy. I have access to some small power boats and jetskis, but find myself getting bored pretty quick with them, brief adrenalin rush, then boredom - and I hate the noise (but then I will take X-country skiing over snowmobiles anyday too). I never get bored sailing. On centerboard boats, if you snooze you get wet.

Re: Any "sailors" out there?

I'm going to get a sailboat in the spring. I will sail in Maine on a small lake(With lot's of motor boats - Sorry you guys, I despise motor boats. Someone even has a big sailboat even though the lake is only 2 miles long. With a cabin. They don't seem to be very serious sailors because it takes them 10 minutes to tack in a breeze(THey go around in circles). Oh well. I guess that's not my business. I want a dryish sailboat so I can sail from May to October. October is a good month to sail in.

Been sailing AND powerboating all my life depending on the need or desire. Right tool for the right job, you know...Don't quite understand the enmity between those choosing one over the other.

Do you still have the MacGregor 25? Do you still sail in Pa. Just in the looking stage to buy a sail boat. Did research on the Mac but would like to speak with someone who has had one for more than a year or so. thanks

As a kid, learned to sail with my uncle in a Luder 16 on Lake Michigan. Later sold it for a Tripp 30. I was miserable until I got my sea legs. Amazing things go thru your mind when you're so far off shore you can't see the Chicago skyline and the weather turns foul. Still, I had the time of my life.

Re: Any "sailors" out there?

Hi All: I just stumbled on to this site looking for repair info for my kicker, and came on the sailing forum. I've been sailing now for about 2 years and puchased an 18' Renken R-18, which is a cuddy cruiser. I sail Narragansett Bay in both MA and RI. I've just got to say that this is a GREAT site! so much information is available for all of us newbies. Well, back to restoring the dingy.....

Re: Any "sailors" out there?

I came across this web site (and spent more time than I will confess to) while trying to find a poem about wind and sailing and stuff. Don't know the title or author or first line, in fact, I could not quote a line of it. I remember it (sort of) only because it inspired the name of a sailboat that belonged to an old man, the Wind And If. I only know the poem reads something like, "..if'n there's wind, and if'n..." there's something, (like sea or sun or sky or sail etc,) a sailing trip would be undertaken. There was a boy I knew in grade school --o.k., had a crush on him-- who I ran into during college. We went out a few times but it wasn't going to go down that road. We talked about sailing because I sailed as a child and young adult. He told about a family trip to (possibly) the New England or Nantucket area. An old guy fell in love with my friend's little sister, like a grandaughter. The old guy invited my friend's family out on his sailboat (a big fancy yacht) named the Wind And If. They all had a fabulously memorable time. I have to find that poem. It has haunted me ever since. Can you, will you please help? I would be grateful. Thanks kindly.
Signed, Haunted Still

I used to teach sailing merit badge at a Boy Scout summer camp. We had a Mac 25 there. I never had a motor on it, and the silt was quite high at our end of the lake. So we only had 2-3 feet of water near the dock. Docking was real interesting with a swing keel almost all the way up, and no motor!

One day me and another lifeguard, and a scoutmaster with sailing experience took the boat out in some pretty severe wind. White caps everywhere. There was no one else out on this lake, except for a windsurfer, going about 40mph. We shut the hatches up, and sheeted in all the way with the goal of getting the boat to tip over. It would NOT go over, no matter how hard we tried. It was close though.
Needless to say, it gave me a LOT of confidence in that boat. I knew I could trust it with kids on board. :)

Wow .... lots of sailors out there......! My name is "Capt. Mack", and I live in Marina del Rey, Southern California. I have sailed just about my whole life, and now, at 42, run a charter business here in Marina del Rey. It is raining right now, but that's OK because it's night time... :D Didn't rain today, sunny !!!
Here is a pic of my boat, and there is quite a story behind her....
-Capt. Capt. Mack, that is one fine looking craft you have there. I'm sure you're very proud. I race in the Fall and Spring with a guy who owns 2 charter boats, does the same thing as you, but in Seattle. Always a great time sailing the charters in the summer. I worked with him on those trips for several years.

Thanks for sharing your boat, very nice.

Re: Any "sailors" out there?

Another rag and string lover here; got the sailing bug over 40 years ago, been sailing ever since, still looking a cure.

We have a 40 foot Stevens/Lees, modified with rear scoops/steps so now 42 foot, she is in Cairns, Australia.

I did my AYF Offshore Yacht Masters ticket some years ago, I spent about a week out of every month on board, well someone has to keep the fish supply up. Conditions here mean we sail all year round.

I love the "Power Without Pollution" aspects of sailing almost as much as glass of rum around midnight when I sit on deck looking at the stars and listening to the fish hopping around in the light over the stern; recapping the days events, nothing like quality relaxation is there. Mmmm time for another rum?

Avagoodweekend......

Re: Any "sailors" out there?

im 36 and have been sailing/racing most of my life. stopped racing when my son was born 3 years ago and got a deckboat. sold my 1st boat 15 years ago to the neighbor and it was given back to me last fall. after a major restoration, my 19' oday mariner with full keel is back in the family. sail it in saginaw bay in bay city michigan...power is nice and convienent but you cannot beat sailing. thanks for starting this thread, there is usually very little action in this catagory - nice to hear from so many sailors

Re: Any

Re: Any

Started sailing when I was 11. I had saved up some money from cutting lawns and what not and bought a used Sunfish. Then I found a beat up Laser that needed a new mast step, bought that and raced that for a couple years, then sold it. Bought a Hobie 16 that also need some work, fixed it, sailed that for a couple years and then sold that. Then bought a Nacra 5.0 (by far the best cat I have sailed, ever. ) that needed the rudders relaminated, sailed that for a couple years and then sold it for the lack of funds thanks to college. Now I have the Crownline in my sig and did all the work on that, but wish everyday that I didn’t sell that damn Nacra. DAMNIT so hard to find too. It was a great boat with the keel-less design. Been able to sail on quite a few nice boats, largest being a 45 American.

Now my father bought a Sunfish, then sold that to get a Force 5 (much like a laser, but more thought out). Now to get him to skip the hobie and get a nacra!

Re: Any "sailors" out there?

I am not a sailor yet, however I am a 'wanna-be'. I am looking into buying my first boat this year, and would like a 28-32 footer with wheel steering. I have tried the motor boat route, but my kids are too small (2 and 5) to really enjoy it. I am also of always dealing with the engine.

Now that I live in the VA area, I am close enough to Norfolk and Annapolis to really take advantage of the sailing area.

Let me know if anyone has some good recommendations on starter boats... I know that a 30' boat sounds large, but it needs to be practical for my family so my kids can play below. I also want to be able to spend a weekend on the water.

Looking forward to hearing from the other sailors out there!:D
